For LGBTQ+ Students and Their Allies

UWM operates several different centers to support students in their academic, personal and professional growth, and we aim to enhance students’ knowledge and skills both inside and outside the classroom. UWM is also dedicated to preparing our students to meet workforce demands at the regional, state and global levels. The services provided by these centers play a vital role in helping students deepen their understanding of different perspectives and collaborate more effectively with people from various backgrounds and experiences. The centers regularly collaborate with each other and other campus units to provide exceptional programming and services to students, faculty, staff and the community. The centers and their programs and events are open to all students. Some programs and events may also be open to faculty, staff, and the community.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is one of the nation’s top campuses for LGBTQ+ students and is currently rated 4.5 stars by Campus Pride as an LGBTQ+ friendly University. 

UWM has achieved one of the highest possible scores for fostering a safe and inclusive campus for LGBTQ+ students and their allies. This success is driven by our deep commitment to student experiences and our attention to their needs and concerns, which extends beyond the LGBTQ+ Resource Center. 

We actively collaborate with departments across campus to cultivate an affirming and welcoming educational environment for all students. UWM has also been at the forefront of groundbreaking advancements for the LGBTQ+ community, with the first LGBTQ+ Studies certificate program in Wisconsin and a vast archival LGBTQ+ collection in the library.

Questions

I’m worried about living on campus – what are my options? 
There are two initiatives that support LGBTQIA+ students living on campus. Inclusive Housing is an initiative that allows for students to be assigned to rooms based on their gender identity instead of their biological sex assigned at birth. The other initiative is part of UWM’s Living Learning Communities (LLCs), intentional communities that cultivate academic or affinity spaces in the residence halls. The Kaleidoscope LLC focuses on building an inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ students and their allies. Both initiatives are opt-in opportunities that students can select from the Housing portal. 
Where are Inclusive Restrooms on campus? 
There are over 50 Inclusive Restrooms across campus, especially in the Northwest Quad and in the Student Union. Find one by visiting our Housing and Restrooms page. Along with using Inclusive Restrooms, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use any restroom that aligns with their gender identity! 
What are some organizations I can volunteer with to support LGBTQIA+ initiatives?

What does starting hormones look like on campus? 
If you are considering starting hormones while at UWM, your first step would be to make an appointment with the Student Health and Wellness (SHAW) Center by calling 414-229-7429. Your first appointment will be a 45-minute appointment, talking about your goals for transitioning, the risks and benefits of the medicine, and changes you can expect. They will be able to answer any questions about costs, examinations or labs, and your prescriptions you may have at that first and subsequent appointments. 
How do I get involved with LGBTQIA+ communities on campus or in Milwaukee? 
The UWM LGBTQ+ Resource Center hosts small and large events throughout the school year. The best way to stay up-to-date is to visit the center or join our Discord. Along with our  physical space, there are other ways to get involved on campus; we have two student organizations, the Rainbow Collective and PROUD Panthers, that support LGBTQIA+ initiatives. If you would like to venture out into Milwaukee, we have a list of communities and organizations to learn more about. 

Centers for Advocacy and Student Engagement

The Centers for Advocacy and Student Engagement (CASE) collaborate to support and advocate for students through comprehensive programs, resources, professional development, and community connections in Milwaukee. Guided by our shared values, we strive to:

  • Advocacy – Engage and uplift the voices of marginalized communities at UWM.
  • Affirmation – Build a community that celebrates and respects students’ diverse experiences, identities, and self-worth.
  • Empowerment – Motivate students to develop agency and control over their college experience.  
  • Community Care – Foster belonging and shared responsibility for student success.

The FG+RC is home to three unique programs: U1.0 UW-M First-Generation Program, Lawton Scholars Program, and DREAMERS
Military and Veteran’s Resource Center
MAVRC recognizes the need for support of spouses and children receiving military education benefits in navigating the world of higher education and we work to advocate for this group as well.
Women’s Resource Center
Using an intersectional approach to advocate for the agency, education, and empowerment of women-identified students.
LGBTQ+ Resource Center
The LGBTQ+ Resource Center of UWM is dedicated to supporting students of all genders and orientations through their university careers with our comprehensive resources, programming, education, and mentorship. We work to improve UWM’s campus climate and promote a sense of belonging for our students.
