Your first line echos my thoughts xD Seems more like astral projection than death to me, death makes the soul unattached to it's body while astral projection, there's still something connecting you to your body, so you can sleep while exploring the world around you.

The slashes and gashes on the body, along with the barren terrain and gloomy sky, work beautifully at capturing the pain and suffering of those final moments,
while the colorfulness of the spirit as it takes form, along with the gentleness of the butterfly, perfectly capture that sense of peace and freedom.

Just a wonderfully, powerful picture all around; and the stark separation of grays and color, depicts the mood and emotions of the piece beautifully. <3

This looks so peaceful, in a way. Simply stunningly beautiful when seen from one angle, absolutely horrifying seen from another. Yet that peace carries through very clearly.
