I've been thinking of picking this up, but I've heard criticism that it's a bit outdated. Never played a Dragon Warrior game before... Think it could fill the Bravely-shaped hole in my 3DS playtime?

The game is good, as long as you can get past how straightforward of a jrpg it is. They added a few things to streamline it and some extra content for the postgame. Though I'm not totally sure since I never played the original.

A bit late, but I can confirm that there are multiple significant changes from the PSX original. In the PSX version it actually took about 2 hours or so before getting into a single battle. It doesn't take nearly as long in the 3DS remake. Each character also now has their own unique appearance for each class, unlike the PSX version where your characters' appearances never changed. Random encounters have also been removed, and you can now see enemies on the world map. Oh and the game doesn't take up 2 CD's anymore. The music has also received a slight improvement. And you can actually see your characters in battle now. That's about all I've noticed though.
