We've been cleaning out mom's house in a losing effort to get it ready for dad to move in with her, although given a recent medical diagnoses we might be cleaning for other reasons now...but I digress.
In any case, I stumbled upon my old highschool portfolio. I hadn't seen it in years and kind of forgot it was even still around. More surprising is that the bugs that invest that house didn't just eat the contents. Anyway, I figured I'd share some of the brutality within, as a means of reminding upstart artists and whomever else that yes, we all start somewhere.
The guy on the upper right became the blueprint for when I briefly did the whole fursona-thing, but that guy on the top left could be called "Drawing Zero." At the time, it was the best thing I'd ever drawn and my first serious attempt at an anthropomorphic character. I never was much of an artist so having managed to churn out something that looked a little better than the shit you throw away when your pre-schooler is out of sight, I continued on down the path of anthro characters. And that led me here. Now. It's not exactly a happy story. But that is, in fact, how it starts.
(And reading the porn stories of this guy I know who tells me about apples and Indycar but, details.)
Many of the drawings within are dated 2006 so, this stuff's about 15 years old. But to best put it in perspective, let me read you the typed-out description insert I wrote for Drawing Zero back in '06:
I really like this one. I just bored in Skill for Success and I was thinking about a story I read with a mouse man*, and I gave it a whirl. I love what I did with the hair; it's my favorite part. I also like the bone structure of his jaw, and I like the white on his muzzle. I try to name my drawings (if they are based on living things), and I think I'll call him David.

Oh...how things change.
*This was probably a reference to the aforementioned apple-vroom guy's stories who, by the way, goes by Field T Mouse. He still porns to this day over on SoFurry. I'm sure he'll say hi.

You're part of the Field furry tree! I'm sure many have become entangled in its roots.
You can really see how far your style has come comparing these to your latest works, especially in terms of depth perception and detail.
These still have an earnestness to them though that's endearing.

One can only wonder how many lives you've derailed with your Randy Rodents of Ravenous Repute.
I'll give myself some credit for having a slightly better grasp of the front quarter angle than many do when starting out. Although really when you look at it, I just drew the head in profile but put the features shifted over slightly. My fascination with pretty-boy eyes is also on display here. Sure didn't know what the fuck I was doing with curly tails, though.
