RIP Nichelle Nicholes
Star Trek fandom lost the great Nichelle Nicholes, best known as Lt Uhura.
Nichelle literally made film history, by breaking the color barrier by kissing William Shatner on screen in Star Trek.
She even ventured in leaving Star Trek and Dr Martin Luther King, a fan of the show begged her not to saying "You have made us equals!!"
Later in life, Nichelle would be a great spokesperson for Nasa, promoting space exploration.
Always playing the calm, cool character on the bridge of the Enterprize , Lt Uhura shall be missed.

Her passing is a true loss. But she left behind an amazing, inspirational and memorable legacy in her generation.
I saw too that as a kid Whoopi Goldberg was awe struck by her appearance in Star Trek, playing a leading role as a main character. So it's no surprise that Whoopi appeared as advisor to Picard in ST:TNG.
I even heard that Leonard Nemoy threatened to quit the series if they didnt give her equal pay for her part in the series.

The ladies I had a crush on, as a kid: Maureen O'Hara; Diahann Carrol; Barbara Babcock; Eartha Kitt; and, Nichelle Nicholes.
I soooo loved it when Nichelle (as Uhura) sang... her voice was just so beautiful. And, I also enjoyed some of the ST episodes and movies where she kicked some butt!
My heart just sank when I heard she'd passed away. Ad Astra Nichelle!

She's talked about it numerous times, and the story's made its way into several of the cast's autobiographies and "making-of" memoirs over the years. Basically, Nichelle was considering leaving the show because her role in the episodes kept getting cut down -- when the cast would get the first drafts, Uhura would have a couple of decent scenes, but by the next draft, half her lines would have been cut, or sometimes even given to the other actors, and by the time they got to the shooting scripts, she'd be down to "hailing frequencies open" and not much else. Finally, after one particularly vexing revision in which they brought in a guest actress to go down to the planet while Uhura basically sat on the bridge and did nothing for the whole hour, Nichelle decided she'd had enough, and told Roddenberry she was going to quit.
That night, she was scheduled to attend an NAACP fundraiser, and even though she wasn't in the best of moods after her confrontation with Roddenberry, she went to the fundraiser anyway. At some point during the evening, she was introduced to Dr. Martin Luther King, who told her he was a big fan of the show -- and when she told him she was thinking about quitting because of the way Uhura's scenes kept getting cut, he urged her to reconsider, and told her that just by being there, as a member of the bridge crew, she was making a contribution towards society seeing blacks as equals. "She's an intelligent, strong, capable woman, just sitting there doing her job without anyone making a fuss over her presence or even remarking on it as being in any way unusual, and that's an important statement in itself."
