Well, the origin of this was some noodling around I did on glass hood ornaments that the studio of Rene Lalique did in the 1920s (including a few furry ones). Done for a lot of show-off customers since the glass isn't terribly practical for everyday road usage. The crime bosses/pimps, in this regard, would be a subset of showoffs.
