Made for
What was once a roaring crowd descended now into a fog of whispers and chewed claws. The Underdelver, at the very apex of the greatest heel turn in Storied Histories League history, loomed over The Dog like death. What was supposed to be a redemption arc as The Dog betrayed the evil Sons of Veronette became a historic beatdown. What was a two versus two match became two versus one, his tentative ally in Macho Mane Grandi Savage having sold him out. Over and over it seemed like The Dog could turn it around, like he’d get back up and pull the match out of the water, only to be beaten back down again.
Minutes ago, The Underdelver’s partner, Fox Hall, fled the stage. Maybe he got bored, maybe he was called away, but tradewind foxes have a magic intuition and Fox Hall was no exception. His intuition has played a role in his stories before. The Underdelver didn’t mind; he had a lesson to teach, but the crowd knew in their gut something was coming. A historic comeback? A walk on? Would the new challenger be an ally, or an even greater monster? Who remained that could beat The Underdelver, evil itself?
The Underdelver prepared his finishing move, the Dungeon Piledriver. The war drums began to pound like thunder… But all gathered quickly realized it wasn’t The Underdelver’s music. It was someone else’s. Few could recognize it as the herald of a very rare challenger indeed. As the great horn joined the drums and the strings and the flute in quaking bass, The Underdelver at last turned from his prey to the great door behind him. The audience’s gaze followed.
In gleaming gold and striking red emerged The King of the Ring, undefeated champion of the long defunct World Fighting Federation. He still wore the legendary Relic Belt, won so long ago, never taken from him. The crowd erupted in cheers. Their savior has arrived in shining scale and mighty claw. His eyes burned with righteous fury and his footsteps shook the earth with the promise of justice. There was no showboating, no trailing his paw through the outstretched hands of the fans flanking him, there was only a job to be done.
The Underdelver paced around the ring’s perimeter, moving to its far side without breaking eye contact with the King. He wouldn’t run. This would be the showdown, the lowest of heels versus the highest of faces.
One beat of his wings carried the King into the sky, and his cape slipped from his shoulders as a final symbolic barrier between him and battle. He landed in the same instant as the music grew more fervent. His impact shook the ring, and the music shook the air. His every move spelled apocalypse. In a final declaration of his intent, he tilted his head skyward, and unleashed a gout of vengeful fire. His domain, all of the arena, was marked by golden glow.
THE KING! THE KING! THE KING!
