As some of you may know, the RMS Olympic is Titanic's older sister ship, the first of a trio built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast Ireland for the White Star Line. I drew this sketch based on a photo I found in a book, the photo shows this view, taken from the 4th funnel, which wasn't real in the sense that it wasn't connected to the boiler furnaces. Instead, it was used to provide ventilation for the galley, the First Class Smoking Room's fireplace, and to bring fresh air down to the turbine engine room spaces. Not only did this make the Olympic-class ships look as powerful as their rivals, particularly Cunard's Lusitania and Mauretania, but having one big ventilation funnel had the side benefit reducing the need for dozens of smaller vents and machinery that would take up a lot more deck space. It also gave a balanced look to them. Ladders allowed access to the top of the funnel and often stokers, trimmers, and engineering staff would go take their breaks there.
The drawing is depicting a time well after Titanic's demise since there are lots of clinker-built lifeboats on the boat deck.
