A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: declaration
“Are you sure this is an accurate copy?” the bulldog asked, after he and the rest of the Cabinet had finished reading through the document once. It was a large sheet of paper, but the printing was clear and legible.
The Royal Navy lieutenant nodded. “Yes, milord. I took it from a printer’s shop.”
“Hmm,” the Prime Minister frowned.
“Run-on sentences,” the Lord Steward muttered, “and irregular capitalizations, like it was written by the bastard get of a Scotsman and a German.” One or two of the mels around the table harrumphed.
“How can you tell?” Dartmouth asked.
“More articulate than a Scot and less precise than a German,” the beagle chuckled, and several more members laughed.
“Enough,” Lord North said, before the Secretary for the Northern Department could take offense. “We are not schoolteachers, my Lords. Now, what do you think of the first part of this?”
“Deist flummery,” one Earl harrumphed. “People like that rascal Hobbes’ paw prints are all over this. ‘Consent of the governed,’ indeed.”
“The Colonies should look to the mother country for their governance and guidance,” the Master-General of the Ordnance said with finality. “The middle portion – pah! A lot of childish complaints directed at His Majesty and the Government.”
The Secretary for the Colonies sighed ruefully. “This last piece is a direct and definite defiance to the authority of the Crown, Prime Minister.” All around the table, heads were nodding. The First Lord of the Admiralty took a pinch of snuff, sneezed, and plied his pawkerchief.
“We are agreed, then,” North said. “The deprivation of the Colonies can only injure the kingdom’s economy, and we must do our utmost to bring them back under the King’s authority.” The rest voiced their assent and stood, intent on going to the Palace to inform the King of their intentions.
Behind them, the paper stood unremarked, headed with the words The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America.
