The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a small mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China in the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. It is the only extant member of the family Ailuridae.
its coat is mainly red or orange-brown with a black belly and legs. Its face features white markings on the muzzle, cheeks, eyebrows, and inner ears, and its bushy tail has red and buff rings with a dark tip. This coloration helps it blend into habitats with red moss and white lichen. Its fur includes long, coarse guard hairs and a dense, fluffy undercoat. The guard hairs on its back are circular in cross-section and measure about 47–56 mm. It also has long whiskers (not shown here) and furry paw soles that help it walk on snow.
They are generally solitary and territorial. They mark their territorial boundaries urine, faeces and secretions from the anal and surrounding glands. When threatened, they stand up on their hind legs and raise their front legs to appear larger and more intimidating to the predator.
The red panda is listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List since 2015. It is threatened by poaching as well as destruction and fragmentation of habitat due to deforestation, but conservation efforts have been initiated in both Nepal and China.
