For reference, the support matrix between M.D.S and SQL Server version is here. Removing support for a version of SQL Server is a breaking change in my opinion - but as far as I know, it's the support matrix which counts here. At present, nothing prior to SQL Server 2016 is supported, and support for SQL Server 2014 was withdrawn in v6.0. |

We aren't considering them as breaking changes, as we haven't supported them since a very long time. Removing functionality not in support as in this case is as good as removing old/unreachable code. If someone wants to continue working with obsolete versions of SQL, there are older drivers that provide that support. Newer driver versions are forward looking and focus on intended functionalities. |
