Cannot upgrade because of versioning problem

I am trying to upgrade to version 8.0.4.0. When I do this, it appears to work in Project A. And it works in Project B. But when I compile Project A to ProjectA.dll and reference that dll in Project B, it gives me the error

Error   BC30652 Reference required to assembly 
'Insight.Database.Core, Version=6.3.11.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=f35c6ef87e515afc' 
containing the type 'FastExpando'. Add one to your project.

I have no references to the older version 6.3.11.0 anywhere in any of these projects, yet it keeps giving me this error.

How can I fix this?

That's really weird. Can you post your .csproj files? At least the section with reference assemblies.

The biggest reference change between v6 and v8 is that the default SqlServer provider is now MsSql instead of SqlServer (which Microsoft deprecated). If you are still using the old SqlServer provider you might have missed updating a dependency.

I'm not sure what you mean by reference assemblies. In the project file, I see:

    <Reference Include="Insight.Database.Core, Version=8.0.4.0, Culture=neutral, processorArchitecture=MSIL">
      <HintPath>packages\Insight.Database.Core.8.0.4\lib\net48\Insight.Database.Core.dll</HintPath>
    </Reference>

and I compile this to a dll. Then, I reference this dll in another project and get this error. Nothing anywhere references 6.3.11, yet the compiler somehow insists on it.

I was hoping to find a dangling dependency or maybe that I did an unclean build. Based on your reference, I see that you're using the net48 build. It's hard for me to test that because I'm on a mac now.

I checked the dependencies in the build process and didn't see anything there. I also verified that none of the Insight artifacts reference FastExpando directly. There are some internal to Core, but when an expando is returned it's just returned as a dynamic object and so I wouldn't expect an explicit reference.

Can you strip down the example and send it to me? I can test it on my windows server.

I don't know how satisfying this will be, but I took my Project A and removed ALL the references, including/especially to Microsoft and System dll's, and added back the dependencies one by one until it compiled, and this seems to fix the problem.

I think that maybe they relocated DynamicObject in such a way that badly confused the build system, although I cannot explain how anything knew about an old version of Insight.Database that wasn't referred to anywhere. But I'll take it for the win.

Feels satisfying to blame your build and not mine. :) I mean...we can build the dotnet build tools. Probably some sort of dirty build artifact. /shrug
