Can't get my win10 style start menu tiles area back

I have been using EP for some time now on a new Win11 machine happily. I have win10 taskbar set with quicklaunch and win10 style start menu.
I had several apps pinned as in the image hopefully attached. I wanted to get rid of the one for Bambu Studio but right click offered Pin to start rather than unpin.
I did some googling and found a workaround here saying group a couple and unpin that group. I couldn't find how to do that so I figured, name the group, unpin it and add the ones I want back.
I've tried all methods mentioned here for pinning to start but that area is just gone now.
Most methods just act as if I did nothing, but I just started typing an app name, it came up and when I chose pin to start there was a notification stating pinned to start, but nothing showing.
No amount of googling and searching here is helping me.

hi and thanks.
I just can't get that tiles area to show itself following your link. when I drag a shortcut off the right, start menu stays there, goes when I press win key and comes back the same when I press win key again.

FYI, my EP setting for start menu looks like this:
(before I screwed it up deleting all of the tiles there was no tick next to "show more tiles", I just tried that now to see it it would help)
