I can't think of a good reason. it probably doesn't make much of a difference. if we change it to a module we should enable it by default.

Anyone know/remember why the VMware "vmxnet3" NIC driver is not compiled as a module?  (ie. CONFIG_VMXNET3=y)

Normally we like NIC's to be kernel modules such that when rc.modules modprobes them UDEV acts on them at that point.
