Based on experience with the Unifi hardware and controller backend, it is much better to have it on a separate system.  Ubiquiti recommends using a 64 bit OS and I’ve personally found it to work better with multiple sites if at least 2 GB of ram is used.  It’s a dead simple install with on a Debian virtual machine.

Why do you think it is a dumb idea?  I hear good reports of the Ubiquiti access points and if I could use an existing device (the astlinux box) as controller then that would make a lot of sense.
