I just now noticed the release of the new version 0.97.x. I immediately downloaded it and wanted to try it out. After starting the game I went ahead and try to load one of my saved games. I can't! Saved games from version 0.96.x are incompatible with the new version.
Now from a technical perspective I can understand why there is an incompatibility. It's not very satisfying however to discover I have to redo the entire campaign to be able to play the mission where I was previously however. It took me a long time to get to the final mission.
Even if you disregard my situation, I believe many people will appreciate the ability to start(play) a specific mission.
If you do feel like that will defer too much from the original Dune 2, you could still allow this when a user tries to load an incompatible saved game:
Option 1: Perhaps you can detect which faction it is and which map and offer to start that same faction + map from the start.
Option 2: If option 1 is difficult, perhaps you can add a menu of sorts to allow selection of faction and mission/map. IIRC there is another Dune-clone out there that offers this option (D2: TGP?).
Good day. Think it already can be done via Single Player Skirmish mode.
I hadn't tried Skirmish mode before.
At first it seemed that only the three primary Dune 2 houses were selectable, but there is a nearly invisible arrow that does allow to select the other three houses. (Me wondering why that arrow is nearly invisible...)
I just finished Atreides mission 1 via Skirmish. The game doesn't let you continue the campaign. It just takes you back to the main menu.
Also, the missions are labeled 1 till 22. Now the final mission is obviously 22, but anything before that I have no idea which one is the same map as my savegame.
Idea: It would help if you would see the world map and if the areas would then be labelled with digits. Even better in that case that when you mouse over to an area that the "by then conquered areas" would receive the color of your house. Perfect score if the state of the map would always look the same as in the campaign, along with the same attack arrows. Difference of course being that the campaign map is always static per mission and when mission selecting via Skirmish it would be dynamic.
Conclusion: Skirmish mode isn't exactly a viable alternative.
