Hi- I am trying to connect to a Firebird Database running on RH 8.0 Linux = from a C# client app on an Windows XP machine without any luck. My connect = string looks like this: this.fbConn.ConnectionString =3D "Provider=3DFirebird.Net;Database=3D/usr/local/firebird/examples/employee= .gdb;Us er=3DSYSDBA;Password=3Dqo97KZnZ;Dialect=3D3;Server=3Ddelllinux;Port=3D305= 0"; The app sits for a long time, but eventually I get the message Object reference not set to an instance of an object. I am able to connect to this database from Interbase Workbench = successfully using the same path, user info, etc. The delllinux server name is mapped = to the correct ip in my hosts file on the XP box. Any assistance you can provide to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Chris Whelan |

Hello: GetBytes and GetChars methods of DataReader are not implemented yet, you can use GetValue for getting Blob value, i would try to implement it this week. -- Best Regards Carlos Guzmán Álvarez Vigo-Spain "No tengo dones especiales.Sólo soy apasionadamente curioso" Albert Einstein, científico. |

Hi, Thanks for the fix regarding inserting Blobs, but now the obvious next question - how to read Blobs from a table. The following code: command.CommandText = "SELECT description FROM TESTBLOB WHERE ITEMID = " + aId; FileStream fs; BinaryWriter bw; FileStream object. int bufferSize = 100; byte[] outbyte = new byte[bufferSize]; long retval; long startIndex = 0; // Open the connection and read data into the DataReader. FbDataReader myReader = command.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.SequentialAccess); while (myReader.Read()) { // Create a file to hold the output. fs = new FileStream(@"C:\Development\Temp\blob.xml", FileMode.OpenOrCreate, FileAccess.Write); bw = new BinaryWriter(fs); // Reset the starting byte for the new BLOB. startIndex = 0; // Read the bytes into outbyte[] retval = myReader.GetBytes(0, startIndex, outbyte, 0, bufferSize); // Continue reading and writing while there are bytes while (retval == bufferSize) { bw.Write(outbyte); bw.Flush(); startIndex+= bufferSize; retval = myReader.GetBytes(0, startIndex, outbyte, 0, bufferSize); } } Throws the exception: [2568] ERROR application-log - Exception: System.NotSupportedException: GetBytes not supported. at FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbResultset.GetBytes(Int32 i, Int64 fieldOffset, Byte[] buffer, Int32 bufferOffset, Int32 length) at FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbDataReader.GetBytes(Int32 i, Int64 fieldOffset, Byte[] buffer, Int32 bufferOffset, Int32 length) And the code: command.CommandText = "SELECT itemId, description FROM TESTBLOB WHERE ITEMID = " + aId; DataSet metadataDS = new DataSet(); FbDataAdapter adapter = new FbDataAdapter(command); adapter.Fill(metadataDS, "TESTBLOB"); string metadata = metadataDS.GetXml(); Throws the exception: Exception: FirebirdSql.Data.INGDS.GDSException Message: Exception of type FirebirdSql.Data.INGDS.GDSException was thrown. How do you inset a blob into a firebird table? The code: command.CommandText = "INSERT INTO testBLOB (itemId, description) VALUES (" + aId + ", ?)"; FileInfo blobFile = new FileInfo(@"C:\Development\Temp\text.xml"); FileStream stream = blobFile.Open(FileMode.Open); int length = (int) stream.Length; Byte[] b = new Byte[length]; stream.Read(b, 0, length); stream.Close(); command.Parameters.Add("@description", FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbType.Binary, "description"); command.Parameters[0].Value = b; command.Prepare(); command.ExecuteNonQuery(); Throws an "InvalidCastException: Object must implement IConvertible". What about point 1 with the two fields coming across as read only? I tried latest cvs sources and I am getting the following error when I do an adapter.update: Command Connection is not equal to Transaction Connection I believe that it is the same connection. I will see if I can make a small program that demonstates the problem and send it later today. Thanks for all your effort so far. I have a table. I have included the sql file to create it and the xml file that gets created by the provider. There are two problems. 1. SDESCRIPTION and STERMSCODE are both coming across into the dataset as read only. 2. ATERMSCODE_KEY is setup as an autonumber field using a before insert trigger. I have set this as not null because I don't want it deleted after it is set. I want to not worry about it and let firebird set the value. Problem is that .net won't allow it to be null in the dataset because that's what the metadata says. I could take away the not null, or I could select all fields except it instead of *. Is there a better solution? I suppose there is no way of knowing it's an auto increment field so that IsAutoIncrement could be set in the GetSchema function? I am also getting the following errors when adding or deleting. Not sure why, I will invistigate further. Additional information: This Transaction has completed; it is no longer usable. Additional information: Deleted row information cannot be accessed through the row. If you need more information let me know. Christoph |

How do you use parameters with firebird, the following code: fbCommand.CommandText = "INSERT INTO properties(id, propName, propValue) VALUES (1, 'title', :propValue)"; fbCommand.Parameters.Add("@propValue", FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbType.VARCHAR, 100, "propValue"); fbCommand.Parameters[0].Value = "some value"; fbCommand.Prepare(); fbCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(); Throws the exception: FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbException: Dynamic SQL Error SQL error code = -206 Column unknown propValue At line 1, column 147. at FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbCommand.Prepare() The column propValue does exist. Hi, FbError class not implemented [Serializable] attribute. It's needed to send errors over network (using Remoting) from server application to client side. It's enough to do follow: //FbError.cs ... [Serializable] public sealed class FbError ... Greeting, Eugene Hrulev. |

Hi, The Firebird.NET provider is a .NET provider, not an OLE-DB provider. You'll have to set a reference to the Firebird assemblies, and use the Firebird namespaces. As a follow up, the sample app does work. The other providers I have tried all appear automatically in the Datalink dialog(In Delphi and .NET). Perhaps I misunderstand how this provider is used? Sorry if you already saw this, but I don't think it went through the first time. I know this question is about as simple as it gets, but I am very new with .Net. I installed the firebird provider with the install file. But now how do I get Visual Studio .Net to recognize it? More specifically, in the DataLink Properties dialog box, there is a list of OLE DB providers. How do I get the Firebird provider in there? Thanks. |

Thanks. |
