Thanx to those of you who have been working with me and helping me on this. MyGeneration's new release this morning now generates Firebird stored procedures for Dialect 1 and 3 correct, and it's free .NET architecture called dOOdads is now supported for both dialects in C# and VB.NET. Of course, this all targets Firebird.NET for it's data access. Mike Griffin http://www.mygenerationsoftware.com At this point we consider this release to be fully functional for Firbird, able to generate complete business entities in VB.NET or C# that are strongly typed, can dynamically query the databases, and generate the necessary stored procedures as well. |

As another commentator noted, it seems to be coming down to permissions. Just who is Monodevelop running programmes as? Mine was installed with a combination of the rpms and Red Carpet 2, so I presume this has all been taken care of. I can run Monodevelop as root (agreed, it is a bad idea) and everything works fine. I agree it is difficult to know where to post the next question. > > Any other ideas? Colin, how did you solve the problem? Another database? > Anybody else having the same problem? My goal was to get some experience with Firebird so that I have some grounds on which to compare it with other rdbms like Access, Mysql, Postgresql etc. I find I have no problem with the tools as long as I stick to the rule that servers are for serving and not really for development. My development for Firebird with the .NET provider would work perfectly fine with sharp develop on a client windows box, so I could do that. So one of the advantages of mysql postgresql would be that I could cheat and use the server for both serving and development. I don't have a second linux machine that I could use to see if accessing the firebird data via Monodevelop from outside the server through the local network would be any better. So I can't really contribute anything further. Colin |

Hi Colin! Thanks for the hints. I started to play around with different Firebird versions and I tested this with Suse 9.0. But the results are all the same. Also the assume kernel thing did not work for me. It's not clear for me after all who is the bad guy in this game. Firebird? Mono? The .Net Provider? I also sent a mail to the mono-list two weeks ago, but I didn't get a helpful answer. Any other ideas? Colin, how did you solve the problem? Another database? Anybody else having the same problem? /daniel Colin Beckingham wrote: > Hi: > > Daniel Freund wrote: > > > And now the problem: whenever I try to connect the database as ordinary > > user I get > > Unhandled Exception: FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbException: Unable to > > complete network request to host "localhost". > > If I start my demo program as root, everything goes well! The current (1.6.1, haven't looked at 1.7a) connection pooling behavior has an interesting side effect: by default connections never go away. If you have a connection string with the default values (e.g. "Pooling=true;Connection Lifetime=0" or don't specify these values) and you write code like: FbConnection c = new FbConnection("connection string"); c.Open(); ... do work here c.Close(); c = null; The connection is put into the pool, and you connection will remain open for the lifetime of you application. However, it will be reused if you happen go create a new FbConnection. While this seems to make sense once you figure out that a Connection Lifetime of 0 means forever (the docs aren't very clear on this), it's not what I would consider expected behavior. The .Net SqlClient connection with the same parameters will be cleaned up after a default maximum timeout if you set Pooled=true;Connection Lifetime=0 (also the default). I'd suggest that the Firebird provider do the same for a reasonable period of inactivity. Comments? Todd _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Win 1 of 4,000 free domain names from Yahoo! Carlos has been very helpful and I have done some more reading and have progressed this far: According to the release notes for Firebird 1.5 there is something special about RH9 in that it needs special instructions to deal with what is apparently a non-standard way of dealing with Posix threading. It involves decalring a special variable in the startup script LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 However if I do this, following the instructions to the letter, then on startup Monodevelop shows the splashscreen icon and then dies. It does this consistently until I remove the extra variable from /etc/profile, at which point Monodevelop runs fine again. I have posted a message on the Mono-devel-list but so far no responses. You might want to give this a try to see if it works with your setup. I wish you better fortune. Colin Beckingham |

Hi people, I already found similar questions on this list and on the mono list but I didn't get a satisfying answer. I have Suse 9.1, Firebird 1.5.1, NetProvider 1.7 (latest binary) for Mono and Mono 1.0.1 installed. My system doesn't have the firewall enabled and it doesn't matter if I use localhost, hostname, FQDN or 127.0.0.1 as server name. The FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.dll was installed with gacutil -i FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird. Additionally I created symlinks from /usr/lib/mono/1.0 and /usr/lib/mono/2.0 to the dll And now the problem: whenever I try to connect the database as ordinary user I get Unhandled Exception: FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbException: Unable to complete network request to host "localhost". If I start my demo program as root, everything goes well! I also can connect the database with isql (as root and as ordinary user) Here is the complete error message: Unhandled Exception: FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbException: Unable to complete network request to host "localhost". in <0x00247> FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbDbConnection:Connect (FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnectionString) in <0x00056> (wrapper remoting-invoke-with-check) FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbDbConnection:Connect (FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnectionString) in <0x0035d> FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnectionPool:CheckOut (FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbDbConnection) in <0x00058> (wrapper remoting-invoke-with-check) FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnectionPool:CheckOut (FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbDbConnection) in <0x001ce> FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnection:Open () in <0x0004f> (wrapper remoting-invoke-with-check) FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird.FbConnection:Open () in <0x00052> FBTest:Main (string[]) And this is my test program: using System; using System.Data; using FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird; public class FBTest { public static void Main(string[] args) { string connstring = @"Database=/opt/firebird/examples/employee.fdb;Server=localhost;User=SYSDBA;Password=masterkey;Dialect=3"; FbConnection conn = new FbConnection(connstring); conn.Open(); string sql = "SELECT * FROM employee"; FbCommand cmd = new FbCommand(sql, conn); FbDataReader reader = cmd.ExecuteReader(); while (reader.Read()) { Console.WriteLine("--> " + reader.GetValue(0)); } reader.Close(); conn.Close(); } } Any ideas? /daniel |

I am using Firebird Provider 1.6 in embedded mode. Sometimes when I try to close a connection: if (conn != null) { conn.Close(); } a NullReferenceException is thrown on the Close(). I can't consistently figure out when it happens. Is there anything I can do to help track this down? Thanks James |

Carlos: In using the DataReader I have been unable to find a method that allows = me to get column data by field name rather than by index. We have = numerous versions of our database available some with fields others dont = have and not all fields are in the same order. I found the GetName = function and have used that to write my own method to do this. If I = missed something and it is there please excuse my blindness. If it is = not there and you feel it would be a beneficial addition I would be = willing to add this functionality if you would like. Let me know what you think. Hello, drilling on events further, I made atest on simultanieusly running the snippet iven in examples and can confirm that both listening applications received the event no matter which one send a statement to server. Now I need to sort out through when the evet is posted and I be off. Carlos, It appears that the error messages that the Firebird .net provider are not always correct. Specifically I'll get back error messages like "No message for error code 152 found". If I repeat the exact steps with another tool, I'll get a different message: "Your user name and password are not defined. Ask your database administrator to set up a Firebird login." It's obvious that the second error is correct, so I dug into the code a bit. The code returned in the status vector from Firebird is indeed 152, andthe provider code maps attempts to look up the error message in the resource using this code. It appears, however, that the lookup should be the code + isc_err_base (335544320), not just the code. A quick change to the code to lookup code + isc_err_base in the ResourceManager.GetString() function yields the correct error message. Is this a bug? Valid for Provider 1.6.1 and 1.7alpha2. Tested my quick fix against Firebird 1.5.1 and 1.5.0 servers. Todd __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! My small network consists of a linux Red Hat 9 server and a windows 98 client. RH9 has Mono 1.0.1 and windows has Sharp develop 1.0 RC2 + .Net 1.1. The RH9 box has Firebird Super Server 1.5.1 installed in /opt/firebird/.... Each machine has firebird net provider 1.6.1 I can start and stop the server cleanly with no problems. I am attempting to access the firebird employee.fdb from both machines, ie windows over the network connection and from RH9 using localhost. After many hours testing my programme on the RH9 box and constantly puzzled by the message "TestCommandBuilder - Exception message: Unable to complete network request to host 'localhost'" I decided to try what I thought would be less likely to work, that is access from the windows box, but it works no problem at all. Running isql on the RH9 machine with the command "connect localhost:/opt/firebird/examples/employee.fdb" also has no problem. I do not have a client installed so I am unable to add to info by exploring ODBC. The only differences between the test programmes on the two machines are: 1. the connection string on the remote machine has the name of my server instead of localhost 2. mono on RH9 needs a reference to System.Data, but Sharp Develop on windows throws up a number of errors if I do not remove this reference. Perhaps someone will recognize this issue or suggest a pointer to unearthing more information. Thanks. |
