Work continues, slowly but surely. I have completed most of the easy things and am now working on more difficult things which leads to less frequent updates. At the start of this year, I expressed some serious hope that we might have a beta by the end of it. But that seems impossible now. I have over a hundred bug reports to deal with and feel I am doing well if I can deal with one a day. Some reports will be duplicates, some will be already fixed, but plenty will still require attention.
That says it all...
From the code base, I'm guessing this software is no longer maintained (abandoned?).
I began using Eudora about 30 years ago and have missed it terribly. Hermes may be the answer! I have about 20 years' worth of e-mail messages (tens of thousands) and attachments from a variety of POP accounts that I've stored on external drives and cloud spaces. I need to organize everything and create digital resources useful to researchers at family and local history archives. I have discovered programs and bespoke executable scripts don't work exactly right. The Mac version of Eudora had a duplicate...
I would immediately setup 2FA with app passwords as a backup in case your current setup fails. I also have my main Gmail account just forward to another Gmail account. I only receive emails from the second account and don't touch the first - all POP3. This way if there's ever an issue with the second account I can still access the first. There should never be an issue with the first since I don't regularly touch that.
Ah, sorry – I misunderstood. So the rule is: OAuth everywhere unless you have 2FA, in which case you can set up app passwords. Since I've already subscribed to auth-email.com and it is working really well for me for Outlook and Gmail, I'm going to stick with it. But thanks for the advice. Good to hear there are other Eudora users out there keeping it going!
Again, I have specific app passwords for several PCs and phone. That's it. Been like that for years. You may have to enable 2-factor authentication but I don't use the phone for that. If you must provide a telephone number, just get a Google number for free!
I just checked my Google account settings again and there's no option to create app passwords. There are a few search results about a similar problem, and some mention phone number, though maybe that is not the case given your experience. Either way - and more importantly! - how are you connecting to Gmail without OAuth?
In my experience, both your statements are incorrect: I do not have OAuth enabled, been running Eudora and Gmail for over 20 years. Gmail/Google does NOT use my phone number! You may want to revisit setting up those app passwords.
I'm using Outlook and Gmail, both of which I think require OAuth for everything now. I haven't set up an application password in Gmail because I don't want to give Google my phone number.
I still don't understand this OAuth2 thing. I use Gmail POP3, mainly for spam control, have application passwords and it still works fine in Eudora. I also use my personal domain accounts with my hosting company (A2 Hosting) and, again, no issues. This after years being told we need OAuth2. What host are you using that you must have OAuth2? I do hope the team incorporates this in the Eudora release. I have paid for 3 licenses, having gladly done so. I still use Eudora, not Aurora, as I'm waiting...
Fair enough. For me, $3/month is a price worth paying to keep Eudora going.
Auth-email.com is not free. I will never pay for this! I still use Gmail with app passwords just fine. All I've been reading is that it will go away. Well, here we are years laterand it still works - oh, and with pop3 no less!
I just posted in another thread but thought it might be worth linking here too as it took me a while to find. The email oauth proxy by simonrob that it seems like a lot of people are using is quite tricky to set up. But there's a link on simonrob's page to auth-email.com which is working perfectly for me.
I got lost in the setup of the tool linked above, but there's a link on there to auth-email.com which worked really well for me. I had to enable the legacy SSL/TLS option first, but maybe that isn't needed any more with more recent Eudora versions?
Jon I'm in the same situation. Would like to have an updated version of Eudora which allows me to keep all my mail and mailboxes so look forward to the replies to your message. Sorry, not "locked by an administrator", BLOCKED by an administrator.
Thread has been quiet for 3+ years but I have a new problem. Moving to win11, to a refurbished Dell Latitude 5510 laptop that I bought from an Amazon refurbisher -- Could that have anything to do with it? Everything else has gone fine, other than the inherent annoying aspects of Win11. As usual I just copied all my win10 files to the new box and didn't bother installing**. Eudora displays all the existing email, but will not fetch or send any. Closes connection after a few seconds. The log shows...
The test is ongoing. Slowly. And it has diverted significantly from its original intention. As well as ensuring compatibility with Eudora we are also making some significant improvements and fixing bugs left over from Eudora. I will update the working of that pop-up window.
I was a bit surprised by the little pop up window saying "This edition of Aurora was created for temporary use in proving the programs coherence with Eudora." on 1-1-25. Oh and that it has expired. I must have missed the info or notice on that. So how did the test go?
Like many users, I have multiple mailboxes open with their corresponding tabs on the bottom row. It would be very useful if each tab can have its own color, so it's easier to find and open. Impossible?
Hi All, What used to be a simple handshake between snd/rcv emails is becoming (by necessity of security issues) less universal every day. I see this in my work in e-comm setting up an email server requires more and more security rules and authorization filters in order to work with email servers ie... msn, google/gmail, and so on. Is it correct - that email authorization protocols & rules will be becoming more complicated in the future? Can Aurora send/receive using an Outlook Server, OAuth2 and...
Yes we are. If you can get it to work for both send and receive pop3 email let us know. It is not actively maintained; simonrobs is. It hasn't been integrated into Aurora -- Pete looked at that and decided it was too complicated at least for now. Code is in Python, not Pete's expertise.
Are we aware of this proxy? https://www.nips.ac.jp/~murata/o2popper/ Source code here: https://github.com/murataya/o2popper?tab=MIT-1-ov-file Perhaps we can incorporate it into Eudora. The MIT license allows commercial use.
gmail app passwords still work for now. Aurora/Hermesmail does not natively support OAuth2. You have to use a proxy which can be complicated to set up properly. But it can be done.
I am confused about this OAuth2 requirement to work with Gmail. I currently have specific app passwords to access Gmail through POP3. Despite warnings that this would be discontinued by now, it still works fine. I only use Gmail because of its excellent automatic spam filtering. If POP3 is gone and this OAuth2 nightmare becomes reality, I will leave Gmail as it will be useless on my phone's email app (K@ Mail). I do hope OAuth2 capability is better supported in the new Eudora. User implementation...

There is a full version available, but it is an alpha (test) version. It is also not free; instead, it's sold as a pay-what-you-want package from https://igg.me/at/hermes80/ (Five bucks or fifty or one hundred will do.) Mind, the "alpha" is all relative; the app is totally usable and has limited support for Unicode and everything too. No. You need to use a proxy like https://github.com/simonrob/email-oauth2-proxy There is much discussion on this at the Eudora for Windows list.
Can Eudora 7 patched with Hermes - send and recieve email using an MS Outlook server?
Glad to hear your still working on it. And take your time with it, just happy to hear its still happening. Thankyou.
It is being worked on. It is coming. Soon? Hard to say.
Hey I hope you dont mind me asking but is this still being worked on and will we see an update coming soon? Personally would love to see Eudora/Hermes continue and have been very grateful for the hard work you have put in to keep it running.
I've used two instances (separate folders) of Eudora since the mid 90's without a break. I'm in Win11 and I've patched 7 with Hermes. I have one POP and one IMAP account set up with my mail host (not gmail.) I've edited the INIs many times, but for many years I have not changed or tweaked a thing. (I also have a couple of strange behaviors to point out/address; which may be moot on upgrade.) For some time until around two years ago I was part of the Eudora Listmoms group - but was overwhelmed and...
I recently received an email from Nick alerting me to Gmail ending POP/SMTP support and OAuth being required soon. I use Gmail and thought I was all set when app specific passwords were being required. Now this poses a problem as I am somewhat lost deploying Simon's solution above. Nick does say that some assistance will be offered on this. I can manage moving from Gmail, although I do have several accounts. The main reason for using them is their SPAM filtering; of course, being free with generous...
I am having the same problem. When ever I get a message from Google informing me that someone has signed into my account, Hermes Eudora locks up if I attempt to read that message. Currently, I filter those messages and rout them to the trash. Does anyone have a fix for the problem that will allow me to read those messages without Eudora freezing up?
Thanks for this. The cantab.net domain switched to TLS1.2 only and this allowed me to keep using Eudora 7.1.0.9
I wish I could tell you but I cannot. Soon, I hope, but....
Awesome. When will an update be out for contributors? I'm running the one in Files.
Consider it done! (As of the next alpha, that is.)
Re https://sourceforge.net/projects/hermesmail/files/ It would be nice to update the "About" box and title bar to reflect the versioning. I have both and it would be best to differentiate at a glance if nothing else. Resource Hacker is tricky to make those changes without the code throwing warnings.

I'm so sorry, Neal. We're currently on Alpha 26, but I had a database crash and essentially all people's proofs of purchase from 2018 went up in smoke (or so I thought—turns out I had a backup on a drive which doesn't fit my computer). Oh dear, I have evidently not made things clear enough. Sorry. Eudora and Aurora will each have a private, independent .ini file but they will share everything else (.toc, .fld, .mbx and .pce files). There is no need for you to copy any part of your existing Eudora data.
Fair enough, Pete. I misinterpreted your directions to "read the instructions and install as directed" to mean there was separate documentation in the zipfile for same. It honestly never occurred to me to look in the .chm file! (bangs head against wall) I am going to presume, based on what you said about the .ini file, that Aurora will act the same as Eudora in terms of displaying any mailboxes if I copy the .mbx and .toc files over, including mailboxes nested in folders in the existing Eudora directory....
There are indeed no text files. What you should use is either Alpha.chm (which is a Windows help file) or Alpha_Help.exe (which is an e-book). The contents of the two are the same. The first time you run it, Aurora will make a copy of you Eudora.ini as Aurora.ini which it will then use instead. So there is no configuring that you have to do at the transition. You can move back and forth between Eudora and Aurora although with only one running at any time. If you make changes in your settings in one...
Pete, I did not find any instructions in that zipfile ... no text files of ANY kind, in fact. I'd also like to ask if there is a way to import my existing eudora.ini file into Aurora without having to look up every single entry in it for configuration. As I pointed out at the outset, I have multiple e-mail addresses and domains, and anything that simplifies the transition would be helpful.

I have taken on the job of repairing and updating the Eudora source code to create a program that we are calling Aurora. When I started out I considered three possible roads to take. One was to start from scratch and create a Eudora-work-a-like. Two was to take another existing email client and convert and embellish it to become a Eudora for the future. Three was to work on the source code for Eudora. The project is going slowly but well.
What's this Aurora you speak of? I'd be willing to donate to the Eudora repair/replacement project (show me how, where) to get a reliable something something Eudora. (So it wouldn't be such an ordeal to update it as needed, ya know?) I ran into a new issue today...
That would be very much appreciated and would earn you a decent donation for the project, Pete.
Fixing up MessageIDs is something I have had on the to-do list for Aurora for a long time. Doing the task is not a big deal and I have let it linger only because there has appeared to be little demand for it. After your posting, I will make it a priority.

My Eudora directory is only 3.5GB. I back it up to an external USB RAID box nightly. I also do the same to a second identical RAID box every 3 days. Finally, the same to another PC over the network. So, if my main PC goes down, I can instantly use the backup. As Eudora is essentially portable, this is a painless and simple process to ensure some safety.

Glad you got it fixed! I know how critical it is to keep Eudora working. And nice going having backups. The rcv files are just where Eudora writes each message that it retrieves from the mail server during the retrieval step. Okay, here is a brief update. Progress on Aurora continues to be slow. There are many reasons for this. However it is also steady. The primary focus at present is getting derived messages (replies, forwards, redirects, etcetera) to work properly. Alpha testers are receiving updates on a fairly frequent basis.
After reading Nick's latest email a few days ago, it appears that the Mac version is getting more attention than the Windows version. This is not good for me, being strictly a Windows user. I think all of us here would appreciate an update on Aurora, specifically the status of each of the features that were initially noted for implementation. It seems we are always begging for an update.

You can also run the bat file on its own to fix the entire mbx, preferably when the mbx is closed. Finally, close Eudora and run the bat file on all mbx'es. I would make a backup of everything before doing this. I run Eudora with all it's mbx'es in the Eudora folder, basically a portable installation as I can...

There are no SSL issues with using Stunnel. Gmail gave me the same issues a few years ago, which pushed me to find Stunnel. I've been using it since without issue, with Eudora 7 of course.. Basically: 1. Stunnel sets up a local server. 2. Eudora sends mail to it on your choice of ports. 3. Stunnel passes it to Comcast on its required ports. 4. SSL/TLS is handled by Stunnel, for whatever level you choose. There's no reason to dump Eudora for Comcast. I've also installed Hermes and it seem to work...

Hi Arthur, many thanks, would you mind explaining a bit, how do you get Stunnel to work with Eudora? The examples they give are a little beyond my technical knowledge.
FYI, I've been using Stunnel for years to resolve previous issues like this. I've had no issues since. Stunnel is simply better supported.
I get the same behavior without Hermes, just Eudora. If I wait 15 seconds or so I can see the message. Small nuisance for a long time now.
I mean the Pilcrow Sign character value 182 which I interpret as CR\LF in my text editor. I Could show it as CR\LF but I choose to use the end of paragraph sign. I call it end of paragraph marker because in a word document or elsewhere that is what it should be used as. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilcrow In code it is usually used in a different way as an end of line character. At least in windows which is what I have windows 11 pro (64bit) which is the only flavour it comes in.
I am sorry but I do not understand your question well enough to answer. Would you please clarify what you mean by "paragraph characters". Thanks.
