yes, I am seeing this too. For someone who might have typed the wrong credentials, or is getting some type of failure I would expect a "try 3x" type of error, but instead I see traffic where the client attempts repeatedly to connect. (infinitely?).

I've been having the same problem with a new server build (Ubuntu 22.04). Turns out the fix is to issue service vboxweb-service restart once the server is up and running. For some reason it won't listen on the port until it's restarted.

Groups not sorted alphabetically
See the attached screenshot - those two buttons control whether groups are shown as expanded or minimised by default. The last button used, sets that preference. Unfortunately there's no way currently to have it remember on a "per group" basis, so when the list refreshes it'll default to all expanded or all minimised. I concede that it's not great from a UI perspective With regards to the order of the groups, I thought they were in alphabetical order so if they aren't, I'd consider it a bug, so feel...
That's good to hear, a work around at least
Is there a way to sort guest groups within RemoteBox? I have the RemoteBox preference turned on to sort the guest list alphabetically and that works fine within the group but doesn't appear to change the sort order of the groups themselves. Also, when I stop a VM in a group the group collapses. If I want to export the VM or change a setting, I have to expand the group again and re-select the VM.
I setup a Debian Bullseye VM with Xfce on the VirtualBox server and it is working fine running RemoteBox. I am connecting to the RemoteBox VM using VNC.
All good - you got it working that's the main thing
RemoteBox certainly does work on a Raspberry Pi 4 providing you're running some kind of Linux distro on it.
Hey everyone, Does this work on a Raspberry Pi 4? I am sure it doesn't, but I had to ask. I have a Raspberry Pi 4 that I use as a workstation occasionally, I was just curious. Thanks Everyone, Michael

You haven't installed xfreerdp which is one of the requirements stated in the docs. What distribution are you using, from the screenshot it suggests Ubuntu based in some way? xfreerdp needs to be installed on the same system that RemoteBox is installed on. Try: sudo apt-get install libgtk3-perl libsoap-lite-perl freerdp2-x11 tigervnc-viewer Then relaunch RemoteBox There's also a newer version of RemoteBox available than 2.7
Interesting issue there Kevin. Tanks for pointing that out. Seems like a compatibility issue with the Xserver in MobaXterm. Please let me know if you find it gets fixed in MobaXterm. I'll add a note to the FAQ about it. I'll leave the "bug" here for the moment

I wouldn't say it's excessive in itself, I have around 50 guests but then between my desktop and my server it's a 10Gbit link, so latency isn't an issue. It boils down to, the more guests you have, the more API calls RemoteBox has to make to grab the list of guests. Those calls occur synchronously and in serial so on a high latency link or a link with some packet loss, performance just sucks. There's 100% no problem running RemoteBox within a VM, even under the VirtualBox instance you're connecting...
I have 4 Groups of VirtualBox VMs on the Server: Group 1 - 9 VMs - 1 Active Group 2 - 12 VMs - 12 Active Group 3 - 3 VMs - 0 Active Group 4 - 3 VMs - 3 Active Does this look excessive? If so, I could run RemoteBox on a Debian Virtual Machine on the headless server - if that will not cause additional problems? -- On 2022-05-06 10:11 pm, Ian Chapman wrote: Do you have a lot of guests? Do you have a lot of guests? Although I'd expect it to be quicker than 7 minutes (depends on how many guests you have really), RemoteBox will not perform well over high latency connections and particularly if there's any kind of packet loss.

I have a notebook running Debian 10 so I tried to install RemoteBox on that this morning. I went to the message log tab and saved the log to get a time stamp and then immediately attempted to connect. In the attached screenshot, you can see it took over a minutes to connect. I gave it about 7 more minutes and it never got past retrieving the guest list and then I killed it. I am running over a high latency connection (ViaSat) and a VPN. I do use the same connection frequently for remote SSH & RDP...
What does the message log in RemoteBox say? What user are you running the web service as? What user are logging in with?
I have been running phpVirtualBox for several years and I am looking at moving to RemoteBox. My headless Debian Stretch server is running VirtualBox web service 6.1.10 r138449. When I connect using RemoteBox from a Debian Stretch desktop, I just get a spinning cursor. No guest list or other server information. I have to force quit RemoteBox to close it. Nothing of value is logged in the terminal window used to start RemoteBox (just several Gtk error messages prior to connection). Here is what is...
Yeah, hopefully it can work on 20.04 too :) Although 22.04 will be released soon for WSL I'm guessing so it won't be too long before it's fixed that way In VirtualBox though you can specify port forwarding from within the VM setting itself, I'm guessing this is just doing the same thing under the hood as a NAT network. Although it does mean you don't have to worry about the IP addresses of the host/guest and it "just works" :)
Glad it's working now at least. Creating a NAT Network is simply how VirtualBox works. It lets you create multiple NAT networks for any number of VMs and so RemoteBox essentially has to follow that design.
Hi Charles. Ok those messages are benign and can be ignored. I'll see if I can replicate under 20.04
It seems this is an issue with WSL Ubuntu 20.04 since it works with 21.10. Although would it be possible to be able to include port forwarding for just a "NAT" configuration rather than having to create a new "NAT Network"?

If you're not launching it from MobaXTerm, it will not work unless you have a separate X server installed and running. If you are launching from MobaXterm, ensure it's internal X server is running and you have firewalled off the open ports.

no more libgtk2-perl in debian bullseye... libgtk3-perl ?
RemoteBox has been ported to Gtk3 and will likely be available in the next major release (probably 3.0)
My internal version of RemoteBox has been ported to Gtk3 and is undergoing testing. The next major release will require perl-Gtk3 with the Gtk2 version being deprecated.
Unfortunately I don't have a work around at this point in time, but someone else might. Debian are doing their best to remove most of the GTK2 stack entirely which is only going to make it harder to retro-fit. I'm considering options because continuing to use GTK2 is only going to get harder, unfortunately switching to GTK3 isn't going to be trivial and it's definitely a case of work versus reward. The other interim solution I'm considering is maybe a flatpack or something like that.

No worries, I just can't repeat the issue you're having as it's working perfectly fine for me. A couple of questions though to rule some things out. What version of VirtualBox are you using with RemoteBox and what OS is VirtualBox running on? Are you running RemoteBox on Ubuntu? If so, which desktop environment are you using?

You will need to use the 'WSL' method on Windows in that case. Links to video files showing how to do it are available here https://remotebox.knobgoblin.org.uk/?page=installwindows

OK a little more information. I needed to create the home folder using the "sudo mkhomedir_helper virtual" command, and then "sudo usermod -s /bin/bash" command. Now if I log in as that user the command above runs and stays running and I am able to connect via remote box. But stopping and restarting the service does not stay running. also even though virtual is the owner of the vboxwebservice.log file it is still empty.
OK so running this above command as myself. works. and I am able to atleast try to authenticate. it tells me i have the wrong password, but i can su as that user and password. But when I do su as that user, and try to run it, I get an error message that says failed to initialize com! hrc=NS_ERROR_FAILURE
I'd suggest running it manually on the server as the user you intend to run it as like this: vboxwebsrv -t -H 192.168.2.187 It should output any errors. If it doesn't connect to it. Are you using VirtualBox directly from VirtualBox or your disto's packages?
Yes that is my concern as well is the fact it says active exited. The /var/log/vboxwebservice.log file is 0 bytes. I even chmod to 777 just to see if that changed anything. I made root owner. I made myself owner. I made my user virtual owner. and it never gets any data in the file. I am not sure where to even start at this point. I can't figure out why vboxwebservice will not stay running. Tonight I went so far as to purge the install, and reinstalled (BTW, both installs were done with 6.1.14) this...
I also meant to add, that I'm pretty sure when you do systemctl status is should be report as active running, NOT active exited. This tells me your vboxweb service is quitting. Look at your /var/log/vboxwebservice.log file to see any error. If it's empty or doesn't exist then your web service doesn't have permissions to write to it. This will also cause it to fail.

It tentatively looks fine, but on the windows box can you install telnet (if not already installed). It's part of the Windows Features options. With telnet, do the following: telnet 192.1682.187 18083 This should verify network connectivity at least. On the linux box I'd check that the weboxwebsrv process is actually running with ps -aef also

You're right it would, but there hasn't been much call for it, essentially myself being the only person that's written any of the code. I'm more than happy to consider contributions from others though. Probably as a unified diff against an official release at this stage, unless there was a sudden rush of active contributors
Thank you. Is there any upstream using a version control system like subversion, mercury or git available? That would realy simplify contributions.
Fixed now. Version 2.7 has also been placed on SourceForge. Thanks for letting me know.
