  • 4* Axiom by IBM was very powerful and far ahead of "c++" long ago but (was) unwieldy to maintain and (let go, made us-public-domain). OA-1.4.2 gets 3*? 2*? is a long build needs (clisp-2.45?) and teTeX (3.0?). I needed CFLAGS -j1 -Wno-narrowing for gcc-14. As for math (the original) was too complicated on linux should be 3* for that (you had to select numeric field before writing a script line or it refuses to evaluate it) (i had mathematic-4 so didn't use it hardly). There is a copyleft project name friCAS of Axiom it's book/manual is very good (but requires Jupyter pipi ubuntu pre-mad binaries). note "Axiom" rel by Redhat works only with GCL which is hacked to require "modiication of gcl lisp" "to work" or who build fails - but that gcl is hard to build with today's tools it fails without (work done fixing low level linking elf issues). If you think Open-Octave looks simpler your wrong - it's a very difficult build and modernly requires ubu pre-built (you cannot build it fails). If you need something with an X interface that's powerful but easy i urge Mathematica or if you need "a free one" xmaxima (maxima) which is a far easier build. OA-1.4.2 took a full 2.5 hrs to compile on an intel i7. HOWEVER after all that it wasn't working. I now see "microsoft is involved", and in linux --no-server --no-gui (no X!!) --no-hyperdoc opens the shell prompt and "seems to do math". warning: ")quit" to quit ;) Like other axiom the Makefile are WRONG they "re-build everything no choice" - which is daunting if you have "no X connection" and have to trace down microsoft hacked why. Like other recent Axiom this one has changes to the original "math library" (that is why most of the 2.5 hr) it is not the base original. This gets an extra * for at at least doing some math and one start for compiling. Another extra * for working with CLISP not GCL, minus 1* for microsoft-ism's breaking Xorg availability. Had to compile it "make -i -k". only a few stops but you cannot fix since "it wants to rebuild all 2.5 hr" at each stop. WISH: I'd rather see a much faster Makefile build (be able to start where i stopped) with Axiom Team only materials and have optional additions to add valuable new material (preferably materials added runtime not build time). I may try that.
  • I just like this software!
  • write support for Windows, but I did not find a version for it
