There's a lot to explore in the app; my limited use so far in converting FLAC to AIFF files worked flawlessly. Intelligent UI provides many options; open multiple files for multi-threaded conversions; fast and insofar as I've tested flawless conversions. No rating for support because I haven't used support (perhaps that should merit a "5"?).

My God, I've been using a Mac since it came out in 1982 and I've NEVER experienced a buggier, brain dead piece of software, if you can call it that. It's only redeeming grace is excellent quality encoding. What good is a preference panel if the program decides it's going to ignore every setting and do whatever it wants? How about actually finding the metadata once in awhile? Or not crashing repeatedly under "CD Paranoia" mode? Only this program, none others, have all these problems and more. Donate? Give me a break! This kind of virus should be illegal!

how to install on a mac?

Simple, easy but powerful and reliable, and still alive and updating! (PS: I use it to split DTS cue to single tracks or export to stereo mp3/aac). thanks! tmkk

Supah-d***h! XLD has so far been the most convenient and reliable way to convert FLACs into iTunes lossless ALAC .M4A files and import them into iTunes (and from there you can auto-downsample them and put them on your iPod without doing anything manual – if you're an old fossil like me who still has an iPod). Even has a metadata tags editor so you can make sure they import with the proper titles and so forth. Also will recognize and use a cover pic in the same directory if one is present with one of several typical file names. And it does a pretty good job of getting info off the Internet, too, unless you're working with a very obscure release. Been using it for about 4 years now.

OMG! Thanks so much for this and keeping the Mac G5 PPC alive!!! I have not used this yet but I have been having to convert my FLAC files on a PC and then copying them to my Mac so I can put the music files in my iTunes and onto my 5G ipod!

Xld is very good for me to convert SACD-ISO to Flac. I found xld-20181019's DSD filter can't choice IIR filter. When I convert a DSD to 88.1kHz Flac, find many quantization noise above 30kHz. Can Xld add noise filter choice. I found some knowledge from roonlabs : The 24kHz filter results in frequency response characteristics that are nearly guaranteed not to offend your PCM gear, but this involves placing a filter fairly near to the limits of human frequency perception. It's a conservative/safe setting. The 30kHz filter is the best compromise, it's the default in Roon, and what we recommend for most users. This setting nicely removes nearly all of the noise spectrum in DSD, while leaving some space between stuff we can hear and the filter itself. The 50kHz filter preserves significantly more noise (especially during DSD64 playback), but is even less likely than the 30kHz filter to muck with frequency response in an audible way. This doesn't mean it's "better". It's possible that with some gear, this filter will sound worse than 30k depending on how the gear reacts to the HF noise.

I recently quit Apple Music and restored my Music library. It was a ton of work re-ripping and converting media. XLD did a great job of converting/ripping music tracks to AAC. The "open folder as disc" was the most used feature, it let me group tracks together and then paste in a Musicbrainz link to fill in any missing metadata or album art. I highly recommend this app to anyone with FLAC or even disorganized mp3 files. Two thumbs up!

I have used XLD since 2013 for ripping my CDs and converting music files. The tool is very fast, reliable and easy to use. In particular, I love the command line version that can be used in a shell script, e.g. for converting multiple wav files with cue sheet to multiple output formats, e.g. Apple Lossless format for playing with iTunes on Mac (better quality) and mp3 for iPhone (smaller file size).

use it since 2012 - top

I've been using this frequently for years, for burning, ripping, and transcoding. Usually (almost always) the GUI. Never had a problem: it does so much and is very simple to understand. Thanks!

I love it and use it daily.

I use this on OSX. It relatively frequently freezes the connection the external for no reason at all. It also seems to report a lot of bad sectors or logs bad rips that when played back sound perfect, which I don't understand.

Great project! Works wonderfully and quite lean too. Thanks!!!

Great app. Simple, efficient, and free. On windows it was a mess to convert audio files with ease but once I switched to a mac and found XLD I was set for life. Thanks to the developer!

Used to be great, but now not functioning. What has happened? Is there an alternative if this is no longer supported?

Wrote author about crashing bug at 4pm US-MDT on PowerPC machine, had a fixed version back by 9 pm.

I am using this to rip all (600+) my CDs. It rarely does not find the metadata, but sometimes has a hard time finding the right cover image. It's easy to paste this in though. Editing metadata could be a lot easier, if you could for instance change the album data like title and artist in one place, instead of having to do it for all tracks. I also use it to convert HD audio to formats that work on my iPhone. In all, a great little piece of software, but it could use some improvements on the UI side.

You can convert APE to Apple Lossless with Avdshare Audio Converter.

I like this software so much, I donated to its cause! Let me tell you why... Simplicity.... Ease.... Quality.... Options.... Preferences....Plugins....and the sheer mass the program can handle! Unlike others that are rating this software down b/c it is not built like an Ikea Instructional Booklet, I needed no assistance with the following: Download ✓ Install ✓ Set preferences ✓ Navigate to folder ✓ and for the cream on the cake... CONVERT 31.7GB FROM FLAC TO APPLE LOSSLESS AND IMPORT INTO ITUNES FROM AN HDD TO AN SSD IN LESS THAN 2 HOURS AND 35 MINUTES!!! That is 47.32GB read and 49.87GB written from a 32 bit program. I am just reporting the numbers, you do the math! Not 1 hiccup, not 1 crash, not 1 Ikea complaint! (Mind you, I like Ikea and their instructions speak for themselves, good job at being all inclusive!) Good Job to the programmers and thank you for the years you have put into this program! I hope more folks donate to y'all! It is rare to find quality out there that isn't inundated with ads! Kudos! If others appreciate this type of program quality, I would like to impress upon you the thought of donating to this group. Cheers!

Solid, straightforward program for converting audio between formats. Great for batch converting. I use it mostly to converting WAV and similar to FLAC for lossless compression, and FLAC to m4a for iTunes. Requires some understanding of audio formats for use, but comes with useful extras such as command line usage for scripting.

Works with el capitan. Please turn to single encoding (1) thread to speed up the ripping process.

Horribly slow for CD ripping. No help. Online documentation is minimal. I found some online explanations of use for CD ripping, but they apparently referred to a different version, since the screens were different. Was able to sort-of figure out how to use it. No options for setting/changing metadata before ripping (i.e., if Genre or other info is wrong in freedb). No options for using different MP3 IDs.

Fabulous tool. Really amazing! Love it!
