It took three weeks to find a new boarding facility for Jack, a six year old Haflinger gelding. He is of the old breed, so he looks more like a draft pony. Hopefully he'll pull a carriage, soon. After a week in the box with daily walks alone it was time to introduce him to his new herd, a group of seven geldings.

Some horses will mingle and act like old lost friends right out of the gate.
I know my big percheron, she was always the leader of the herd where-ever she went. Then I get her home, and two old quarter horses rough her up in the middle of the night. I came out the following morning and she was missing patches of fur on her butt, and her ankle was bleed some. I was furious, but the two old horses seemed to no longer have an issue with her, they certainly push her around though. Which is something I never understood, with one kick she could kill the two old quarter horses, yet she never even bites them when they try to bite her. She is twice their size and half their age...and they're picking on her.

My understanding is that horses are very rational at that point. Everything in this world is a potential predator and horse eater. So every herd needs a leader that is capable of protecting the herd by giving directions, taking actions and making the right decisions. Every horse seems to love the security of a strong lead so that they themselves do not need to take care of all the potential threads but let their lead decide.
So - as long a horse does not trust the lead it will (as far as I understood it) try to take the leading role themselfs - just to be sure that they will survive. But as soon as some other horse proofs that they will take the better actions, give the better directions and make the better decisions it will happily oblige to them - even if it means that said horse treats them roughly. It's better to be treated roughly than to die.

I understand that, herd dyamics can be straight-forward when you take a look. But she is this strong, heavy horse, that always led other herds and ruled with an iron hoof if anyone tried to take over...except in this herd. She just doesn't fight back.
She is also my baby, so for me to see her hurt that one time by the other horses, I was angry because my views are biased.
