Jeep Highlight "LJ" Wrangler Unlimited (G)
I figure since this is the first one Ill do a simple model, which was only produced a couple of years.
In 2004 Jeep stretched the wheelbase of its TJ wrangler by 10", officially named unlimited and unofficially referred to as the LJ platform. They were standard equipped with the 4.0 I6 engine and a Dana 44 rear axle with a 3.73 ratio and a NP231 transfer case, available in most trim levels. The Rubicon package was available in the final 2005 model year when the TJ was revised to the JK. Rubicon's were equipped with a Dana 44 up front, a NV241OR transfer case with a 4.10 low ratio over the NP231's 2.72 low ratio, with a six speed manual, and some interior creature comforts unavailable in other wrangler models.
The longer wheelbase of the 'LJ' made it more stable thus allowing more towing capacity, nearly double its short wheelbase brother.
The TJ Wrangler was replaced after the 2005 model year with the JK platform, and the unlimited was stretched to a 4door. It will be included in the JK highlight.
I personally like the longer wheelbase models, even if the turning radius isnt as tight, its more practical and has less u-joint issues when lifting because of its longer driveshaft. Stability really helps if your Jeepin includes doing 60 down dirt trails =P
What do you Jeepfurs think of the first unlimited model, the throwback to the classic long wheelbase CJ's, was it kept to our high standards of trail riding? =P
