Glad you appreciate the aesthetics in Dark Souls! It taught me to love textures, level design, and environments in general. It's also a treat seeing one of Macks' subjects with this rich texture treatment!

Yeah, jeez, they have some of the best level design around. The way the handle verticality is so distinct, and they manage tension super well between their illumination and control of line-of-sight with obstacles and blind corners. Good games UwU

It was probably the first game where I didn't know or care about the light source following my character. <3

And at least in Demon's the local light source following your character is diagetic -- they're like "oh yeah, you're carrying a crystal thing that binds your soul to the Nexus (and also conveniently lights a 3-foot radius around you DON'T ASK U_U)."

But yeah, that can be distracting in some games for sure.

No worries! I love learning stuff like that because a lot of times knowledge of the term is what really reifies the concept (cf. Sapir-Whorf hypothesis), which adds new tools to your toolbelt for tackling your art/storytelling problems.

True! Though I'm glad the Souls team took mercy and didn't make you feel around for monsters in the dark with your hands and feet <3 I don't think I could have handled the stress...

Man, TotG was so amazing the first time through. Just like actually fumbling around in the dark, you'd take a step forward...nothing. Take a step forward...nothing. That sense of tense exploration of space was fantastic. Then they'd throw in the slides just to force you to move at a faster pace than was comfortable, and to add a sense of no return.

And yeah, taking up your shield slot with a light source is a classic, merciless DS design call. Either stumble through the darkness with some modest protection, or know what's coming and be unable to defend against it. They're sadists, but they do such a good job of crafting the experience UuU
