What is League of Legends anyway?

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle area game, akin of DOTA of old. It's a free to play game with a rotation of free Champions to play as and has an in-game currency that you can gain by playing in order to purchase Champions you want to have available permanently.

Is it like SMITE in gameplay?

SMITE and League of Legends are both MOBA games and yeah, they're pretty much the same except SMITE has a third-person view of your character and League of Legends has a RTS-style view of Top-Down without being locked onto your character.

Oh, it's a top down game like the original GTA.

The mechanics for the game, the abilities of the Champions, the power the items give, are all finely tuned and carefully considered by the developers with constant updates to make sure everything is balanced according to design goals.

That's what I meant. I don't doubt that SMITE is similar. It's just that in my experience, League of Legends does this one thing and does it very well.
