Josh gets caught in the rain and is forced to take shelter in a shed. If only he knew it already had an inhabitant...
Taking Shelter
The soft pitter patter of rainfall filled Josh’s ears as he ran through the woods. His clothes were quickly becoming soaked and his shoes squelched with each step. It was just his luck to get caught in the rain, and he had forgotten his fishing pole by the river in his rush to get home.
A sharp crack filled the night filled the night sky and he started running faster. The rain picked up too and he could barely see twenty feet in front of him. He was soaked now and couldn’t help but shiver as he ran.
A break in the woods appeared and Jake ran into an open field. He saw a large shed with no door and ran toward it. There wasn’t any house in sight though. The sky flashed again before he entered the shed. He was going to have to take shelter here while he waited for the rain to stop.
Through the dim light, Josh tried to pick out the details of his shelter. It was surprisingly well furnished. No tools adorned the shed’s walls, but thick carpets and pillows covered its floor. He grabbed a blanket and wrapped himself in it, trying to get warm. Even though it was a summer afternoon, his teeth were chattering from the cold rain. He laid down with one of the massive pillows. He enjoyed rainstorms, at least when he was inside. With the comforting sound of rain hitting the sheds roof, and surrounded by soft, warm blankets, his eyes started to droop. What better way to pass the time than to sleep.
Right before he closed his eyes for good, something blocked the meager light entering the shed. The smell of wet dog filled his nostrils and he opened his eyes to see a giant shape at the entrance. It violently shook the water from its fur and entered. Jake’s breath hitched in his throat. This wasn’t just a shed, this was a doghouse.
Ever since scientists synthesized the reforming gene, the market for man-eating pets exploded. The gene was spliced into nearly every domestic animal along with increased growth hormone. There were even some enclosures that did it to more exotic animals like tigers and snakes. However, this caused Josh to be deathly afraid of dogs. It didn’t happen right away though. At first, he loved playing with the newly giant animals. But when he was six, a badly trained Great Dane had tried to eat him in the park. Ever since then, he avoided the beasts like the plague.
The giant shepherd noticed him and he backed himself into the corner. His heartbeat raced as it approached. Adrenalin rushed through his veins and his breath wheezed in and out of his lungs. He couldn’t get far enough away. His arms flailed around him and scratched against the shed’s wooden walls. There wasn’t anywhere else he could go.
Sammy stood over the boy in the corner and tilted his head to the side. The boy wasn’t behaving like any of the other humans he had ever met. Normally, he was greeted with excitement and treats, through snacks or other humans. He sniffed at the boy’s face. But the boy didn’t smell happy. He smelled afraid, which Sammy primally associated with prey. A sharp pain reminded him of his aching hunger. His family had forgotten to feed him that morning. But this wasn’t how his meals normally smelled. He was used to excitement, acceptance, and sometimes even lust. The boy had lots of adrenalin, but it wasn’t the same. This wouldn’t do at all, he thought as he lapped the salty tear off the boy’s cheek.
Josh’s breath hitched when he felt the wet tongue on his face. He closed his eyes and curled into a ball. This was just like that time all those years ago. In a moment, the dog would pounce and he would scream, sharp teeth cutting into his skin…
He waited with baited breath, but the attack never came. He kept still, and eventually he heard the dog lay down beside him.
Eventually, he opened his eyes and saw soft brown ones staring back. The dog’s head was laying on the ground, ears perked up and looking at him expectantly. The dog perked up and shuffled closer, causing him to flinch. When he opened his eyes again, the dog’s eyes were level with his own. He heard a whining sound come from the back of the dog’s throat, and before he could do anything the dog was nuzzling its giant head into his chest. He stood still in shock as the dog whined at him some more, until he tentatively pet the dog’s head.
“Good… good boy”, he shakily said. This seemed to encourage the dog, who proceeded to shove him against the wall with its head. His face pressed against the short fur on top of the dogs head, and he barely manage to reach both arms around the dog’s muzzle to pet the thick fur on the dog’s neck. “Good boy, nice doggy”, he repeated over and over like a mantra. After a while, he noticed that both his breath and his heartbeat slowed back to normal as he focused on the giant animal in front of him.
Finally, the dog released him and rolled over onto its back. It took up most of the floor space in the now crowded shed. The dog looked at him with pleading eyes and whined again. It wanted a belly rub, Josh realized. He cautiously stood up and walked to the dog’s side. Its body came up to his chest, even laying down. He noticed the dog’s sheath and corrected himself. His body came up to his chest. Josh heard a jingle and saw a tag on the dog’s collar. He bent down and examined it. The dog’s name was Sammy.
Sammy looked at him expectantly and he reached for the dog’s stomach and started to rub. The shed was soon filled with the dog’s happy panting, but Josh didn’t think he was doing a very good job. He could only reach half of the dog’s belly like this. He needed better leverage. Screw it, he thought and kicked off his shoes and socks. Then, he grabbed the dog’s thick fur and pulled himself up onto the dog’s stomach.
Now on his hands and knees, Josh rubbed and pet the dog with all his might. He vigorously scratched at the dog with his hands and feet. Sammy wriggled and moaned underneath him, and Josh could hear his tail thumping on the ground behind him. This was crazy, he thought as he tried to keep purchase on the stomach, but if the giant dog wanted a belly rub he was going to give him the best damn one he could.
He kept it up for as long as he was able, but eventually, he flopped down on the dog too tired to continue. His face sank into the damp fur, rising and falling with Sammy’s heavy breathing. This was nice, just like laying on a giant fuzzy pillow. Sammy must have thought so too, with his tongue lulling outside his mouth.
A deep rumble shook the body under him. Josh stilled, but then it happened again, even louder. Was that the dog’s stomach? He thought with fear. Maybe it was too good to think he could avoid being the dog’s snack. He lifted his head up and saw Sammy’s own raised up and looking at him.
It took all of Sammy’s control not to devour the boy on his chest right then and there. He breathed in the boy’s scent, most of the fear was gone. That might have to be good enough, he wasn’t sure how much longer he could wait.
Sammy rolled back over and Josh fell onto the carpet. The dog started pacing around the room, and he stayed still, unsure of what to do. Then the dog laid down, positioning so that he was sitting between the dog’s paws. He stared up at the dog’s face. Sammy was really nice, way different than that dog all those years ago. He relaxed back into dog’s furry chest, muzzle forming a roof over his head. There weren’t going to be any problems waiting out the storm here after all.
Sammy breathed in the boy’s intoxicating scent, making his mouth water. The boy was so close. He couldn’t stand it any longer. Drool dripped from his mouth and onto the boy’s lap.
Josh stared at each drop of saliva that fell from Sammy’s mouth. He didn’t mind, dogs drooled, and he was already wet from the rain. The dog’s whine filled his ears and he stood up to pet him some more. He faced the dog to only find a feral grin.
A massive paw knocked him down and pinned him to the ground as the dog frantically licked his face. Josh sputtered, struggling to breathe through the muscle and saliva. Then the dog grabbed his legs with his jaws and swallowed. Josh understood now, he really was just the dog’s meal.
He struggled to hold back his fright. He knew there was no way he would overpower the beast. The dog’s jaws snapped forward, gripping his chest and lifting him into the air. The massive tongue slipped under his shirt and lapped at his skin. He saw the delight in Sammy’s eyes before they disappeared from his view as the dog swallowed again.
His head entered the mouth and Sammy’s hot breath surrounded him. His face was pressed against the dog’s palette and saliva puddled around him. Sammy moaned as he savored him. At least he tasted good. The mouth closed around him and the dog swallowed one last time.
Sammy panted happily as he felt the boy move down his throat and settle in his stomach. He wished he could have tasted the boy more, but he had been too hungry. Feeling full and content, he rolled onto his back and stretched out. He laid his head on the soft blankets, feeling drowsy. His eyes started to droop before the sound of rain lulled him to sleep.
Josh probed at the stomach’s walls with his finger. It constantly shifted around him, covering him in slimy mucus and stomach acid. But other than that, there was nothing. Sammy must have been really hungry.
He felt calm, even though he knew he should have been panicking. If Sammy had eaten him right away, he would have been. But Sammy helped calm him down, and was relatively gentle when he ate him. Sure he felt the bite of his teeth, but they had never broken skin. Nothing like last time. He was lucky the reformation process also healed any injuries the body had. Compared to that time, being eaten by Sammy was pleasant.
He relaxed back into the stomach and felt Sammy roll onto his back, flipping him over as well. He rubbed at the wall above him, just like how he gave the belly rub earlier. He wondered if Sammy could feel that or not.
He felt the dog’s breathing and heartbeat slow as he fell asleep. Josh wasn’t sure if it was the lack of air or comforting warmth around him, but he started to fall asleep too. He closed his eyes and curled into the stomach, which molded around him. Hopefully the storm would be gone when he was released.
The end.
