It's all about the confliction in how religion establishes a well documented hatred for gays and lesbians based strictly on their lifestyles. For a lot of people is basically giving yourself over to something that completely hates and doesn't accept you for the strict purpose of acceptance and guidance ya know?
Ancient religion didnt care at all for the most part (yes including ancient Christianity) about whether or not people were gay fam. Hatred of queer people as a phenomena has only showed up in the past 500 years. Hating religion as an entity is misplaced/ignorant when "religious hatred" actually just comes from bigoted people corrupting religion as an institution. Hate Catholicism for corrupting biblical translation, and Christianity. Thats fine. Hating faith itself is counterproductive and simplistic entirely.
Im not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying what most people believe and where all the judgement comes from when people are taken aback that gay and lesbian people are in fact religious. It's not uncommon but people use it as bias towards someone's talking point. Religion does a lot of good and bad. It's up to you in what to believe in.
People use anything and everything to bias points. Religion is one of hundreds of things that can be corrupted and used to spread hate. Literally anything can and has been corrupted at one time or another. Again, deflecting the actual problem of corruption to religion itself is simplistic. I know plenty of horrible religious people, AND horrible atheists. The point is to not make assumptions or ostracize people for ways of perceiving the universe. (provided someones views arent say, nazism for example lol. that crap is just evil)
