It’s unfortunate that the royals other than Twilight tend to have been knocked out of the plot. It makes Celestia, Luna, Shining Armor, and Cadance look weaker than they actually are.
Fortunately, Season 9 reasonably addressed many fans’ complaints that Celestia was useless. Unfortunately, the royal family of the Crystal Empire remained stuck needing rescue. At least the show finally addressed a much more important issue:
Until now, Equestria’s fate seemed to depend on a chosen few. Now it’s clear the magic of friendship can be wielded by anyone who believes in it. This was one thing the Student Six discovered — adding their own part to the legacy of the Mane 6 and the Pillars.
(Technically, the Season 9 finale had the royal family of the Crystal Empire go into hiding — to ensure Flurry Heart as the designated survivor. Still, that meant they couldn’t be an active part of the rescue effort. Or at least such an effort never got mentioned.)

Maybe I should explore the trauma Shining Armor and Cadance experienced getting ambushed by the revived Sombra. They might have doubts about whether they can truly take care of their daughter and their kingdom. Maybe they finally gain the confidence to let Flurry Heart practice using her full powers, even though it will be a rough going at first.
Shining Armor could definitely use a chance to earn his own wings. Overall, I believe the big-brother-little-sister relationship could have used a lot more development.
In my own work, the big brother is a crucial part of the series. He is the main one who teaches his sister about friendship. When his sister unexpectedly transforms into an alicorn, he starts to become jealous. To earn his own position as a ruler (and earn his wings in the process), he must be ready to learn from his little sister.
