that is no witchcraft, but academic knowledge! gotta learn about colour theory bro
while the main picture is a hot and cold relationship (cold figure vs warm background), the background and figure have each their own relationships - background mostly has complimentaries (red and green) and figure has primaries (red, blue, yellow). background and figure use different contrast types to stand out from each other. i also use a limited palette so the picture can all stick together! the picture has many details but like 4 main colours. (yellow, orange, green, blue and a bit of red). while each colour has its own hue variants if you pay attention you can see the same shade being used multiple times for multiple things. this is a way to deal with colours in a composition but there are thousands others! learn the basic colour theory things and colours wont ever let you down again.
TL;DR limited palette and different colour relationships between background and figure so they stand out from each other

I have every now and then gone through some courses that have a section for colour, but it doesn't seem quite stick in my brain as other topics such as values/composition etc. I suppose a full colour themed course of some sort might be nice.
This particular picture seems a little more complex than basic colour theory so to say, but I kinda get the explanation! Usually I end up just throwing a gradient map over mine to make them come together haha.
Thank you for the explanation Xuu <3
