Critically Endangered (1/?)
Sometimes we need to get a bit serious about these issues. Earth day is coming so we might as well be conscious about it.
These are 7 out of 6,811 species that are officially recognized as CRITICALLY ENDANGERED by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2021.
It really breaks my heart because all of them are gorgeous. And we can learn so much from each and every one of them. And of course, if they disappear, there is no going back. Once they become extinct, they are gone for good.
What you do matters. The reason why they are going extinct range from poaching and illegal pet trade, to habitat loss and climate change. We all can contribute to the cause. Even if you don't see them or you don't live anywhere near them. Here are some ideas:
- Inform yourself! Go to the list of critically endangered species and read up about some of the animals or plants that are threatened near you. And if you can, donate to organizations that focus on conservation!
- Don't buy exotic pets. Don't buy trinkets or objects that come from rare animals or plants. The less people consider it as "cool" or "appealing" to own these, the less profitable it is for poachers and illegal traders to sell these.
- If you go to natural spaces, please, please, PLEASE don't leave anything behind. Animals are perfectly adapted to find their own food. They don't need your help. Trash can often harm them and stunt their growth. And also, don't take anything from the natural environment as a souvenir. I know rocks, or flowers, or seashells might be beautiful. but they belong to the ecosystem. Take a picture instead. It lasts longer.
- Be conscious about how much trash you produce. Try to limit the amount of plastic you generate. I know this is hard, but it matters. The best kind of waste is the one we can avoid. Recycling is good, but we mustn't forget about the other two R's, reduce and reduse!
- AVOID FOOD WASTE AT ALL COSTS!! This is serious. When you throw away uneaten food, it usually ends up in landfills, where it decomposes and releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that speeds up the warming of the atmosphere.
- Consider making your house more efficient. Change your lightbulbs to LEDs, make sure your rooms are well insulated, If you don't need heating/cooling, turn it off. You can always wear an extra layer to keep warm, or remove your shirt if it's too hot. It's your house, no one will judge you. All of this is because we need to reduce the amount of CO2 that we release into the atmosphere. If we don't the planet will keep warming, and while you have an AC, all the other animals don't.
- Pay attention to what you eat. You do it at least three times per day (or maybe more). Limiting the amount of meat that you consume is one of the most impactful decisions you can make to save animals in the rainforest. Hectares of jungle are burnt down to make space for raising cattle and growing hay to feed these livestock. Consider skipping meat once per week. And if you're feeling generous, try vegan alternatives. You might be surprised!
- Lastly, call your representatives. Tell them that these an any other species you consider, matter. Talk to people and keep informing them. The more people know, the more we can all pull in the same direction, and make a long-lasting change.
These are just some ideas. If you have more, leave them in the comments so others can also consider them and we can all avoid having to say good bye to these wonderful species.

That's all for now. Thanks for bearing with me, and sorry for the gloomy note. But we can make it better.
