East vs West (by Kenji_Blake)
YCH from the talented
kenji_blake, also featuring
cyberlightning's Richard and
drakmear's Jake!
Sir Richard and myself had been hired by some castle lords to help quell a dangerous terrorist uprising. The rebels had been merciless in their attacks, razing fields and buildings, forcefully recruiting others to their insurgence and slaughtering those who would not obey. Of course, some skilled outside help was called for. What I first found unusual that it was only the two of us. One knight and one warrior. Surely such a dangerous group should require a greater defence?
Then two rebels charged forward, blades raised. I surged forward to lock blades with one, holding my shield aside to block any support from the sidelines that might be hiding. But none came. It was just the two, on their own.
And as I clashed with my opponent, I could tell he was not experienced or skilled. He held his blade like a gardening tool. His grip was weak, his reactions sloppy. It was as though he had never seen any sort of combat before. Anyone with real combat experience should have been able to block my slice, but his little knife fell from his hands, and a slash of blood spurted from his chest. There was screaming. The other rebel immediately stopped paying attention to Richard, dropped his blade in the grass, and rushed to his comrade's side.
Only too late did I learn that Richard and I had been deceived.

A lesson to remember, even when hired, take everything you are told with a grain of salt. Perhaps after you saw that the rebel was inexperienced and posed basically no threat to you, you could have tried to reason with him, why is he attacking a fully armored warrior with just a knife?
It certainly looked like he was forced to do it, as if he was one of the people who got kidnapped, hopefully, it was all resolved in the end...
