In certain parts of the continent of Arcadia, there are places where the boundary between the material realm and the realm of the fae is much thinner than average. In these spots plants and animals become affected in peculiar ways.
The scene above shows an example of such an area... Or more specifically, the very edge of such a "Fae-touched" area. At the point where the fae realm energies become palpable, the grass changes color to pink and gains slightly mutative properties, further amplifying the effects of fae magic. Animals, such as these marmots and ceratopsians, gain features usually not seen in their more common relatives. Prolonged exposure to fae energy can lead to the formation of new species altogether.
The average, common arcadian marmots have turned into Shock Marmots- rodents capable of storing and utilizing electricity in order to defend themselves from predators. They store the electricity in the manes running down their backs and the bushy tips of their tails.
Meanwhile, the generic ceratopsid dinosaurs have developed into Radiant Ceratopsians - these mountain-dwelling horned dinosaurs can produce and manipulate light and electricity to fend off predators. Their bright-blue frills can unleash blinding flashes of light, while the feathers that cover their backs (an unusual trait for horned dinosaurs) serve to store electrical charges. If a predator decides to attack a Radiant Ceratopsian from the flank, biting or clawing at their sides, it will receive and literal shock (comparable to touching an electric fence).
The Fae-touched meadows gave rise to several unusual species of flora and fauna, many of which are yet to be classified and studied. Before that, we can only speculate what other bizarre wonders the Fae Realm has in store for the natural world.
