In Norse mythology, dwarves were warrior and smith beings with a strong temper sometimes enemies sometimes allies as much with gods as with men, having forged most of the divine attributes and sometimes themselves gifted with magical powers in some myths, living at the deepest bowels of Earth and of the mountains, soot always on their skin (which according to some translators at times makes them the famous dark elves hence the ears in my drawing and at times have nothing to do with them and are thus different beings), sometimes parents or children of the giants according to the versions. Sometimes beautiful, they are often described as old but rough men. Incorporated to Germanic folklore, it's Christianity that makes them beings entirely malevolent and ugly and shrinks them, no size being precised in the mythology. As for Arthurian legends they would incorporate the famous beard to the description
