I wrote this story as an assignment for a University Module I took, "Science Fiction and Philosophy". In this assignment, I was tasked to tell a fairy tale as a science fiction story or vice versa. I took the former and while I could reference actual fairy tales - which they encouraged and allowed - I decided to make my own story to put my D&D DM skills to the test a little. I'm pretty happy with this short story, I got full marks for the assignment too. Loving the thought experiments from my introduction to Science Fiction.
You might find familiar characters in here too, as I peppered cameos from friends into this story :D

The advancement of Emergency Medicine has come a long way. Sudden Cardiac Death is no longer a fear as our partners from Mythos Laboratories, led by Dr. Senphyro Goldmane, have come up with a solution to minimise fatality rates. Their invention of the Autonomous Cardio Defibrillator (ACD) – a microchip-sized implant on the AV node of the heart – has seen remarkable success! Indeed, it is an achievement worth celebrating.

It is with inventions like these that draw us closer to an otherwise unfathomable idea of cheating death. Death: a facet of life that seems so absurd and abstract yet remains to be a fact of life. What happens when someone experiences death? During my research, I had read accounts from patients who suffered cardiac arrest and survived recalled mostly about passing out and waking up in the hospital. A marginal handful recalled an “out of body” experience or witnessing strange visions of light and Bahamut himself. Delusional, but what if there is some truth to that? I wonder if this held the key to understanding death. I wonder… can we cheat death?

Ever since my latest log, the idea began to fascinate me. I may not be pious, nor do I necessarily believe in mysticisms and superstitions, but here, I will give credit where it’s due. Fables of the ancients spoke about the idea of the manifestation of “self”; how everyone in Areth has a “self” and that was what makes us different from the flora and fauna in this world. It would seem that this concept is woven into the idea of life in dragon-kind. If that is so, would that mean that Death is the void of “self”? When someone dies, what happens to this “self” of ours?

It has been a week since I pondered about this concept. In the end – despite my better judgement – I decided to visit a cleric over in the Grand Shire of Bahamut. Apparently, she claims that she bore witness to the “departure of self” from draconic bodies. I’m skeptical, but I suppose she is worth studying. I collected a biological sample from her to run some diagnostics in the lab. She introduced herself as Aurora Goldenscales, and while she graciously offered her experiences and expertise in the subject, I don’t think her knowledge of the spirits would provide any benefit on the study…

I was wrong. There happens to be a gene mutation or a misconfiguration in her neuronal synapses that allowed her to see these incorporeal manifestations. I hypothesize it works similarly like individuals who suffer from Synaesthesia, the ability to see sounds. DNA sequencing revealed a point mutation in chromosome 7. Isolating this gene, I was able to figure out what it does (See Lab Report 35). Essentially, it gave Aurora broad-spectral vision, allowing her to see infrared as well as ultraviolet wavelength rays. Intriguing! Now that I know how her abilities work, I can begin my collaboration with Dr. Senphyro to program this unique physiological ability into a visor. Finally, a step forward in revealing the truth!

The Visor seems to be working. Strange manifestations of incorporeal dust were now apparent. Aurora suggested these dusts were “Selves” of dragon-kin who found themselves lost in the spectrum of our world. I don’t want to jump to conclusions yet, but… I witnessed for the first-time what Aurora has witnessed multiple times. There was a fatal car accident outside my lab’s building yesterday. I saw… “Selves”… leaving the bodies of the victims involved. What was even more peculiar was the fact that some of these manifestations stayed hovering near the bodies they left. Others seem to depart swiftly into disappearance. I noticed a trend however, that bodies whose “Self” has disappeared could not be resuscitated. Could that hint the underlying mechanism for death? I needed to test this experimentally.

It took a while for Dr. Elian to come up with the experiment. A huge hurdle was to find a way to contain the “Self” once it has departed the body. We settled with the use of a lead containment mechanism – if it could contain radiation, it could probably contain something as obscure as “Self”. Now, test subjects… No one in their right mind would want to volunteer for this, understandably. Though admirable, albeit overzealous in seeing his research through, Dr. Elian threw in his coat and volunteered without a second thought. This was his experiment, and no amount of dissuading from me could stop him. He is confident with my inventions and trusted me severely enough to put me in charge of resuscitation procedures, let alone invite me as collaborator. He has scheduled an appointment with me to get a controllable ACD surgically implanted into him on the 7th Night Cycle of Deneb.

Today’s the day. An intracardiac administration of 100mg/ml of cardioplegic solution was given to Elian to stop his heart. Wearing the visor, me and Aurora observed his “Self” depart from his body, signalling the cue for the encasing procedure. The experimental data analysis of the “Self” was something for Elian to interpret, but I was more concerned for the null hypothesis – does resuscitation work with a contained “Self”? Resuscitation took 15 minutes, and Elian regained vitals and consciousness not long after. Astoundingly, his “Self” is still in the lead containment. Though, he was… Grinning… and muttering something on the operation table. What did he mean by saying “So greedy”?

The body of Dr. Senphyro was found dead in [REDACTED]’s office while [REDACTED] was standing against the wall with a grin. He did not resist arrest. The body of Aurora Goldenscales was also found dead in [REDACTED]’s lab. It was worth noting in surveillance cameras that she was seen reaching for a lead container in the lab before she was dragged out of view by [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] will stand trial for two counts of First-Degree Murder on the 1st Night Cycle of Fabian, 3236 PD.
