In the mortal realm, demons lose their ability to reconstitute themselves. In their realm they can be reborn over and over and over, they can merge with other demons, grow stronger or weaker, but their sense of "self" never perishes.
In their base form demons are more like... aspects. A demon is an idea (in the Platonic sense), not a physical, tangible thingie. It is always itself and can never be more or less than it is, no matter how much other stuff becomes attached to it. Since our realm is based on physics, and not forms, the ideas become solid and bound to the laws of evanescence.
