Greetings reader
What is chestnut brown, the size of a medium dog (20-40 lbs), barks, and has tusks?
Meet the muntjac deer. Native to Asia, present-day muntjac deer can be found in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Indonesian islands, Taiwan, Korea, and Southern China. They thrive in habitats with dense vegetation, rainforests, and monsoon forests, often staying close to water sources. Besides their tusks, muntjac deer have large scent glands under each eye. These glands can swell from small bumps to inflated balloons as large as their eyes.
In the early 1900s, a few muntjac deer were brought to the United Kingdom. Since then, they have spread and reproduced, becoming an invasive species that competes with native UK deer.
Also known as water deer due to their affinity for water, muntjacs are thought to have appeared 15-35 million years ago, with remains found in Miocene deposits in France, Germany, and Poland.
