Okay! I'll be slowly posting my Lapi-rock-brain fueled commissions, and the hardest part is sorting out all the character ideas that this whole thing has inspired. So far each picture may or may not be a different Lapidean character idea/concept, and may or may not remain Trevor, or develop into their own Character.
But, he's the first one I'm posting. Not the first I got, but done by Gloedik and inspired my favourite/most amusing character idea XD But yeah, note that 'Trevor' here might become a new character in the future XD
Also, you can just assume most of these are set in a canon AFTER Ren's experience, when Ana's research is more public.
___________
Trevor loved magic. It's why he worked hard at something for once to make it into the academy, and why his major was simply magic theory and applications. Sure, he had schools and fields of magic he liked more than others, Transmutation and illusion for example, but he also just loved knowing 'Stuff' about magic, being able to pull off a slew of simple cantrips and tricks, and a guilty pleasure of managing some simple self-transfiguration. The human form was just so... common afterall.
It was in the transmutation halls that he met the friend most important to this sequence of events. A girl, well, young woman. Young than him, newer and earlier on her path of magic mastery, with a singular goal. Ayeza wanted to be a mermaid.
It baffled Trevor, it confused him, but it amused him and who was he to invalidate someone's transmutation dreams? Point out flaws and limitations and complications that future might bring? Sure, but not stop them. From Senior/Junior student connections to mutual sounding boards for ideas, they became friends and unofficial siblings.
Neither is sure how it happened, but they just noticed one day, shrugged and accepted it. Friendly sibling ribbing, support, pranks and jokes became their new normal as they continued. Trevor continued to dabble in different magics, Ayeza progressed learning water magic and figuring out transmutation.
Of course, this is all background. What's important to note is, Trevor drabbles a lot. He very much likes to cross the streams. What happens if you cast divination magic with the framework of evocation? Or Conjuration but Abjuration? Not surprising for someone finding their own path on the way to a Unified Magical Theory.
He often has several projects on the go: reams of notes, dozens of books and journals, and spell scrolls in various stages of development and deconstruction scattered about his rooms. Rooms that sometimes looked like a printry exploded in it. Organized Chaos he called it, but he did have a... 'system'. It made sense to him, depended on visual cues, proximity to items and materials of relevance. It wasn't efficient, but it worked for him.
Did make it tricky when his interests and focuses shifted on a whim. He often rushed from classes to class, lecture to lecture, seminar to seminar. He wasn't in a rush. Unlike Ayeza, he just had a passion and curiosity, not a clear fixed goal.
A lot of his friends found ways to nudge him out of obsessive spirals though. After the fourth time noticing he was missing for a few days and finding him literally trapped in a book from experimental spells.
That day, Ayeza hid his glasses. She simply moved them from their normal spot while he slept. That day, Trevor was also Irresponsible and in a rush. He had a moment of inspiration, a dream he thought gave him a new perspective on one of his projects.
And he just couldn't See without his glasses. Grabbing a few pages and scrolls he tried to figure out which project was what, focused on his new idea more than the sensible action of finding his glasses (it wouldn't have been hard, she moved it to a table on the other side of his bed). And a bit too monofocused to do the simple thing of magicing up a temporary replacement for his glasses.
He's normally very good about not triggering spell scrolls. Especially ones he was in the process of de-constructing and littered with counter-clauses, alternative rune-works, theoretical spell-latices... In fact, he tends to keep those clipped with counter-magic charms to disrupt most casual casting attempts.
He was... very excited. And thought he noticed something on the scroll that might be what he thought of.
And with how much of the spell was his own work, and his own pen transcribing the complicated research of an at-this-point notable mage... the scroll was also 'excited' to be used.
Trying to use magic to read was just another 'bad timing' on this unfortunate morning.
Of course, Ayeza was distraught at what he accidentally set in motion. The school at this point was getting pretty tired of 'Accidental Lapideans' turning up. And the excess magic also burned through the scroll, with most of his notes on it, adding MORE complications to his mess of a situation. So it wasn't until that night that he could really come to terms with his situation.
Still, he's taking it in stride. And trying to recreate his research to figure out WHAT he changed in the spell. Aside from the 'owner' clause of the golem-framework being flawed, a lot of other 'permissions' seem to have been shifted or broken due to the conflicts his drafting caused. The staff were very much not pleased. Neither was Trevor when he realized the casting of the spell pulled most of the gold from his room to use in his filigree. He’d stocked up a lot of it too for various projects he had in mind.
Time will tell where things go for him. It probably has at least one future mer-sister on the side.
