Who the hell is she?
Tuesday, December 10th. Nashville, Tennessee. Arizona vs Tennessee. The score at the end of the night: Arizona Demons 119, Tennessee Moonshiners 121.
She didn’t even play. So why?
The game was a particularly tough one. Lisa ended up with 22 points and 8 assists, but she had done better in the past. Two more points and Arizona would have tied, going into overtime. Just one more two. Hell, if one more three had made it… But she was off her game. And SHE was to blame. She didn’t even play. She just sat on the bench, cheering. What’s weird, she would even cheer for Lisa whenever she made a basket.
Ashley Nadeau was drafted to the Moonshiners coming from seemingly nowhere. She wasn’t at the combine, she didn’t participate in any scrimmages, and yet she was drafted all the same. And she looked… She looked like Lisa. Or at least it felt that way. And the name. Nadeau. Sure, it’s just a name… but what if?
Ashley was clearly an interesting girl. She seemed to not have a care in the world as she cheered for both her team and Lisa. Maybe it was a ploy to though Lisa off her game? Was that true? It worked either way. Lisa made 5 out of 11 shots, 4 out of 9 of them from the three-point line… closest to Ashley.
After the game Lisa tried to shake off her nerves, but it didn’t matter once Ashley zoomed up to her. She was taller than Lisa, and full of glee. She stood there, towering over her. Lisa stood stunned. There she was. And she clearly wanted to talk. What should Lisa say? What would be okay to say? There were many questions Lisa wanted to ask but none of which were appropriate for a first meeting.
Ashley, shaking with anticipation, began first. “Eliza! OMG it’s so nice to finally meet you!” Lisa slowly nodded, her face still in complete shock. “I’m like, one of your biggest fans!” Ashley then grabbed her jersey top and shook it. Slowly Lisa looked down to see what she was doing and was mortified by what she saw. 93. Ashley’s jersey number was 93. Lisa looked back up at Ashley with a more horrified look. “You played one heck of a game! But that’s to be expected!” Ashley laughed. “But, hi! My name is Ashley Nadeau. It’s nice to meet you.” She held out her hand, waiting for Lisa to shake it.
The more she looked at Ashley the more Lisa felt sick to her stomach. The way her short hair swoop to one side… She looked like… him. And then there’s that name again. She even pronounced it the same way. It had to be a coincidence, it just had to be. And then that jersey number. How dare she. Everyone in the league knew how special that number was to Lisa. How could this woman be so disrespectful? Sure, Wayne Kirkpatrick had the same number, but this was completely different. This was Lisa’s number, not hers.
Ashley stood, all smiles, and waited for Lisa to shake her hand. It took a minute but eventually Lisa slowly moved her hand towards Ashley’s. “Right…” she finally responded. “I guess we can never be on the same team.” Lisa forced a laugh.
“I thought of that! I’d either just pick 92 or maybe 94 to be one higher than you!” Lisa clenched her jaw.
“Oh,” she said softly. “That’s… cool… Welp! I gotta get going, sooo.” Lisa turned to walk away but she stopped mid step. There was so much Lisa wanted to know. “Actually… Since you’re like my fan or whatever, wanna go grab a drink or something?”
Ashley’s face lit up. That’s all Lisa had to say far her to profusely agree. The two went their separate ways to get changed and then headed out together for a nice, secluded bar. It didn’t matter though. Once fans caught wind that two FBA players were out and about, everyone and their mother came to see them.
The two entertained the crowd seeing how they couldn’t avoid them. They drank shot after shot, turning a simple bar into THE hangout spot. Champagne flowed everywhere, fans hung from the two’s shoulders, pictures and autographs of all kinds were taken and given. Soon Lisa had lightened up enough to appear to be Ashley’s childhood best friend.
The night went on like this until the two could finally slip away. Drunkenly, Ashley led Lisa to a cab headed for Ashley’s condo. Once they arrived they sang and sloppily made their way down the hall to Ashley’s door, where they pushed their way in and flopped onto the couch together.
“We… should probably drink some water,” Lisa slurred. With a groan, Ashley rolled off the couch and comically crawled into the kitchen. Lisa then instantly sat up and straightened her clothing. She waited patiently for her drink as if she were waiting to be called back for a job interview. Which made sense, except Lisa would be the one conducting the interview. It was time for some answers.
Ashley crawled back into the living room with two bottles of water and slumped onto the couch next to Lisa.
“This has been… the best day of my life,” Ashley mumbled.
“Drink some water, or you’ll have a hangover tomorrow during practice. You won’t want that.” Ashley sat up and did as Lisa suggested. “So… why are you such a big fan of mine?” Lisa asked as she stared down at the floor.
“Wha? Isn’t it obvious?” Ashley hiccupped. Lisa shook her head. “You’re a mouse… like me. I watched you for a long time and… You’re like… amazing.” Ashley turned over onto her back to rest her head in Lisa’s lap, surprising Lisa in the process. She didn’t stop her though. Lisa just timidly and curiously brushed her fingers through Ashley’s hair. It even felt like his.
“You… seem to know me pretty well, but I don’t know anything about you.” Lisa started small with her questions. “So… where are you from?”
“New York. Like you. Brooklyn, though…”
“I see. You’re parents… They must be so proud of you for making it into the FBA.”
“Probably not…” Ashley slurred. “They wouldn’t know that I’m in the FBA.” This intrigued Lisa.
“How not? Your face is everywhere now. I mean my dad… um… my… well my family found out pretty quick from watching TV.”
“Nah. They wouldn’t recognize me. I’ve been an orphan my whole life.” Ashley nestled further into Lisa’s lap as Lisa stroked her hair. At this point she didn’t even recognize she was still playing with Ashley’s hair.
“An orphan? So… you don’t know either of your parents?”
“Nah. Never met ‘em.”
“So… your last name… is it… like the only thing you have from your family?” Lisa timidly asked.
“Oh that? No… I had my name changed.” This again. “Between you and me, my real last name is Carmichael,” Ashley giggled. “So, I guess I’m like Scottish or something? I donno.” That didn’t matter. Why Nadeau? Why did it have to be his name?
“So, why did you change it?” Lisa asked with anticipation.
“Secret!” Ashley rolled over to face Lisa’s stomach and closed her eyes. No! Now was not the time to fall asleep.
“Aww come on! You can’t leave me hanging like that!” Ashley just laughed in response, fading into a light snore. Think, Lisa. “If… If you tell me, I’ll be your best friend!” Childish, but this had to work.
“Really…?” Ashley whispered. “That would be… awesome…” Lisa nudged Ashley, but she didn’t budge. No. Come on! You have to wake up. You can’t just leave it there! Maybe the answer wasn’t anything important, but Lisa needed to know for sure.
It was late. And Ashley showed no signs of waking up anytime soon. And Lisa couldn’t hang out at her condo much longer. She needed to catch up with her team to head back home for practice.
“Shit…” Lisa muttered. But she had to let it go. She picked the sleeping mouse up and carried her to her bedroom. Lisa felt it was the least she could do after tricking her to go drinking with her, even though she thought she’d have more time with her. Tucking her in, Lisa tried one more time to wake Ashley. “Please… Can you tell me whose last name you have? Is it from your adopted dad or something?! Please! Tell me!”
“Orphan… silly. Not adopted,” Ashley stirred. Fuck it. Lisa took a chance and raised her hand. And with the back of her hand Lisa slapped Ashley. With a jolt, Ashley sat up.
“Wha?”
“Who’s Nadeau!” Lisa shouted. Ashley just slumped over in her bed and closed her eyes
“Mentor… Dave…” And like that, she was out like a light.
“Dave? As in David?! Like David Nadeau! Ashley! You have to tell me!” But that was all she was getting out of her. She could slap her again, but Lisa already felt bad for doing it in the first place. “Shit,” She muttered again. “Fine.” Mentor. Dave. Maybe her father… her former father… whatever he was… HE might know. Though she prayed he did not.
