Don't ask me how. But I got access to one of these creatures' network, in order to take a closer look at their digital habits, and the findings were fascinating. Suffices to say, a few of the crazy theories running around acquired additional backing through this endeavor; also, given the complete lack of care for privacy or control we're about to uncover, this bitch likely loved every moment of it.
Exhibit A : online survey scheme. This one was almost a given : who other than a welfy would have the time or motivation to fill in endless surveys for a few gift cards? A rapid check of the emails would reveal the obvious : not only was our subject partaking in this massive, continuous surrender of his personal information to dodgy corporate partners for scraps, he was downright addicted, filled in an average of 135 surveys per 24 hours over the last 30 days; to anyone curious, for an average of 197,32 bucks a month in the form of gift cards accepted by a variety of big and trusted brands – so, to anyone paying attention, the relevant companies got both this poor thing's buying habits in excruciating details, and fodder for said consumer habits' continuation, while the advertizers got what others would call the lion's share : an endless trove of trivia regarding his personal details, leading to evermore targeted ads, from trivial everyday consumables not covered by monthly shippings of UBI essentials, to the most intimate details of his desires. I'll leave it at that, but needless to say, these corporations absolutely know more about him than his own parents or family physician.
Exhibit B : this one's a little more dodgy on the face of it and my commitment to scientific integrity compels me to rate it still, at the stage of likely, but unconfirmed. It's the social media bot scheme. Like the previous one, it's at least partly an additional income source (that much is confirmed, by the papertrail leading to some obscure program to boost engagement with social media companies in varying states of their life cycle), there again, it seems, in the form of gift cards rather than actual money, leading some to believe this compartmentalized, untaxable and non-cumulative transaction method might be currently thought of as the main currency solution for the have nots of tomorrow's society. But this point is not as of now, the most contentious aspect of the issue at hand. Indeed, the theory went that the welfy, or anyone willing to give up in a similar way the very integrity of their right to expression, would go around social media holding up opinions favorable to the status quo, upvoting comments thereof, and defending the aforementioned... by god... tooth and nails. Some of the more conspiratorially-enclined would indeed wonder who would so readily go all in boot-licking like the endless amount of accounts doing so, suddenly caring about the most trivial of things, suddenly, unexplainably vitriolic towards anything whose deviation to the norm could threaten an easily identifiable set of core pillars of the powers that be. Many discarded such activity as the result of a dead internet, discussion circles made up mostly or entirely of bots.
I'm not sure anymore about this point, and that was the idea of a few who figured that maybe, taking the example of previous so-called “troll farms”, a caste of internet users would be so depraved as to take the role of these non-sentient users. Indeed, persistent as a bot can be, and sophisticated as they're getting, they still regularly betray themselves by their unmistakable artificiality, and break character. That is, from the point of view of anything seeking to spread their message in a more organic way, no pun intented, where a bot of the meat bag variety would come in handy. But this is also the point where I cannot affirm in good conscience this is actually going on.
