It was a warm morning in the heart of the village square when Kaede settled herself on the worn edge of the old stone fountain.
The scent of fresh bread lingered in the air, mingling with the heat of sun-warmed stone.
A young pup stood behind her, tongue peeking out in concentration as she gathered the princess’s long hair into a loose, playful braid.
With each loop, she tucked in lavender, daisies, and dandelions picked fresh from the field, her tiny paws clumsy but full of joy.
Kaede said nothing, only smiled softly, allowing the moment to pass without need for words.
The children of the realm did not see her as royalty but as someone safe to approach, to talk to, to braid flowers without fear.
In a quiet café tucked between ivy-covered stone walls,
Kaede could be found wearing a flour-dusted apron and a modest maid’s uniform.
She moved gracefully through the clink of teacups and quiet chatter,
offering cool, jiggly cat jelly to villagers who greeted her with warmth.
Her sleeves were rolled, her hands steady, and her eyes gentle.
She said little as she worked, offering smiles more than words.
The coin jar at the counter slowly filled from those who could spare a little, each coin meant for families displaced
by conflict along the realm’s edge. She asked for nothing, gave without hesitation,
and made herself part of the world she hoped to heal.
And somewhere far from the scent of bread and soft petals, Kaede stood in the fog,
surrounded by crumbled asphalt and silence too sharp to ignore.
Behind her, frightened children pressed close.
Ahead, bandits crept forward, blades drawn and eyes cold.
Her sleeve hung torn, her fur dirtied and damp, but she did not step back.
With arms wide, she placed herself in the bandits’ path, unmoving, unyielding.
Her voice rang clear across the distance between them. “You'll have to kill me first.”
“That is just my job. As a princess. As a citizen. As someone who just cares.”
