They are a group of honourable and good-hearted rebels, fighting for the freedom of their people from oppression! They are only interested in pursuing their righteous cause, and they have no time to think about material gains...or maybe it's the complete opposite. :P
After the fall of Empire of Sirath, many of its inhabitants begrudgingly accepted their new human overlords, but many others decided to fight to the bitter end. Several rebel groups rose all over the territory, determined in reconquering back their nation and being free from human oppression. Different human nations, such as Elaris or Laatven, have tried their hardest to deal with them, but the lands of former Sirath are vast, the non-human population supports them, and at every reprisal the rebels gain new followers. While many of these groups truly fight for their ideals, many others are little more than bandits, who are more than happy to turn against anyone depending on how convenient it is, including their own people.
Back when I started working on my setting, I used to give my kitties a pretty scruffy look, with scars, ripped clothing and barely fitting armours. As I developed their culture more, I started portraying them more often with decorated armours, clothes and weapons, but for once I wanted to bring that old vibe back. These guys are barely scraping by, this looks suits them. :P

It's making me think of that Terrible Writing advice joke during one of the sponsor sections where the jailed rebels went "like that time we stole vulnerable resources from desperate farmers, for freedom of course. Or that time we blew up that children's hospital, It was a imperial children's hospital!" And the villains went "you know, maybe I judged you too harshly before."

That is most likely what happened, an escaped slave / prisoner. It's 100% personal for him!
Hard for them to be unified again, since the area has been historically divided in petty kingdoms and tribes. Even during the Sirath rule, things were not exactly peaceful, with many groups just waiting for their chance to gain independence again. It's likely many areas will form their own kingdoms, though, should they reclaim their freedom.

In chaos and instability, opportunity abounds, and opportunists rise to the occasion. Some are motivated by ideals, but others simply by the fact that few are going to be able to stop them (especially if they pick their targets right).
I see that the crouching guy on the right has a lot of whipping scars on his back and the remnants of an ankle manacle. Looks like someone is eager to get some payback on those that enslaved him. Makes me wonder what the stories of the other two are and how they came to be such high-minded brigands.
