The Most Overplayed Songs in History
TR;DL for those who feel this is too lengthy.
It’s time to get the elephant out of the room, people. Billboard Hot 100 is a punchline. It always has been, it always will be. Number one hits on any given Billboard chart (or anything by an artist that is more well-known than one or more of their #1 singles) have always sucked and are no indication of musical quality in general. Likewise, lower-charting songs from artists with massive pop culture impacts, too much staying power or resurgences in popularity via TikTok (e.g. “The Anthem” by Good Charlotte, “Potential Breakup Song” by Aly & AJ, “Even Flow” by Pearl Jam and “In This Diary” by The Ataris) are also terrible.
I know there was good (if slightly obscure) music from the 1940s, perhaps even good modern rock from as early as 1976 or as late as 1991. However, all standard record charts worldwide have always been full of horrible, formulaic pop music, bullshit crossover hard rock and radio metal and it's no indication of the quality of music in general from a given time period; that means the assumption of there not being any good music today is almost always based on mainstream radio music, which is crap and has always been crap.
Nowadays, even YouTube spins and Spotify and these ridiculous metrics are factored in: it used to be radio and singles sales. It’s ridiculous that YouTube can influence things like that. It’s not a measure of how locally popular a song is when anyone can click it. I saw some statistic like some no name nobody has heard or has about 37 top 10 singles and it’s like “No, not really.”
Avril Lavigne actually continued to have Billboard Hot 100 and Pop Airplay hits as late as 2013, even though her momentum/popularity began to dry up in 2009 after years of being milked dry. Not only were all of Lavigne’s post-2007 singles quickly forgotten outside of Asia, but they only seemed to peak within the top 40 because of rotation on YouTube and Spotify.
With all this out of the way, it’s crazy how almost all of these #1 or frequently-streamed songs have been overplayed, whether on the radio or in movies and TV shows. Without further ado, here are the most overplayed songs in history:
