Shira, daughter of Master Adjunct Gular'shel, relaxes with her cigarette along with her mate and husband, Javier. The Shal'rein have long been known as savage brutes among the Itreans, but as more of them begin to filter into the human worlds, a new realization begins to unfold. Much like the humans themselves, there is great complexity in the sharklike race. Some Shal'rein are kind, caring individuals, warriors who fight to the bitter end to defend their homes and lovers alike. Their savagery, while known, isn't so commonplace as it's been propagandized.

Shira is no different; her personality is generally unusual in that she displays little emotion towards others, while her actions speak louder than words. Her defection to the UWA and the UHN, along with her mother, was a critical blow to the Shal'rein clan. With Zilik's Disease infecting the entire Itrean race, the Itreans must turn to mankind to help save them. A gene introduced by humans renders the virus ineffective, allowing Itrean males to be born once again. Much like the Yutilians and the Aksren, the more the Shal'rein learn about this, the more they begin to flood the human worlds in hopes of finding a human mate, so that they can be proud mothers once again.

Of course, it is often easier said than done. The Itrean Clan Conflicts have been a forever constant in Itrean history, reminding everyone that war and bloodshed are likely to stand in the way if love is to eventually and somehow conquer it. It is one that often leaves the most intellectual to quietly ponder while smoking a favorite brand of cigarette, possibly enjoying the fruits of success and victory. Then again, the mysteries of Shira can only be uncovered over time.....
