[Comm] Darou mitosis [re-color]
This is an old commission I made for
rin-u
It’s the comm that I feel proud with how the character’s form, pose and composition is depicted, however, back then, I never felt satisfy with how I colored it (original https://drive.google.com/file/d/15s.....?usp=drivesdk) and the feeling kept coming back in my mind whenever I took other big comm. So, it had been one of big comms that I didn’t feel like posting.
Mostly, I did my art by “reverese engineering method” which means I first have an imagination of a finished picture in my head, then work on the (digital)canvas to achieve the most similar result to the picture. But for some art(usually multi art) which I have to work on organizing complex structure of body(s) and organs, there is never an already-complete picture popping in my head. I either got a blurry one which didn’t show organs detail, the one that only told me about pose sketch with no color, or no picture at all. So instead of reverse engineering the picture, I do real-time trial and error on my (digital)canvas by just start to draw it right away and re-adjust things to see if it will fit. This method mostly work well in sketch and outline process, but sometime end up dooming the coloring process - I have no idea what color I should put so I just randomly place the color and adjust until it’s kinda okay, until I’m tired of adjusting.
However, after taking a long break from comm and take some time to be fixated on finding & practicing a few new technique of adding outline(focusing on line weight and adding scattered of darkest shadow along the line) coloring(focusing on creating harmony of color for the whole picture by using one to three main color to control mood & tone of the scene/vibe) and lighting&shading (did a few more study and practice on how light&shade should reasonably appear on object according to direction of light and the object’s form) plus using the contrast or similarity of any color value(lighter vs darker, opposite or near color on the color wheel, and different intensity and saturation to either separated object from background or blend them together. I gain some confident(not much) to rework on the commission, from re-do the outing to color.
How do I feel now about this piece of work? Honestly, I think I feel much more satisfy with it. There are still wayyys to go to make it look even better, but I can’t figure out the exact way right now. Anyway, I think I am going on the right way and the energy to keep on practicing more nice-looking colored art has been boosted! using the technique of keeping over, of suggestion is welcome ^^
