It had been busy the last few weeks for Remy.
Following his hard work on Thanksgiving, he returned to school with several new assignments and reports waiting for him.
But with the arrival of December, he couldn't help feeling giddy over Christmas coming soon.
That weekend, he wanted nothing more than to relax. But his father had other plans.
On Saturday afternoon, Remy had to help decorate the house for Christmas. There had been reports of a nor' easter in the forecast, and Mr. Fox wanted to get it all done before it hit.
Even though there was no snow, it was still very cold.
He went into the garage and came back out carrying a tall ladder. Remy tried to help him. It wasn't very heavy, but still big enough.
They sat the ladder down in front of the house and leaned it by the doorstep.
"Alright, good." said his father. "Remy, hand me some lights over there."
Remy picked them up off the grass and handed them to his father. With the lights in one hand, and a staple gun in the other, Mr. Fox climbed up and got to work. After stretching out the chord, he stapled it down, one end at a time.
"Make sure the ladder is nice and stable," he called down.
Remy held on tightly.
When that was done, it was time for the second chord.
"Hand it up to me," his father called.
Remy took a deep breath and climbed up with the lights.
"Come on," said his father. "Don't be afraid. It's not that high up."
"I'm okay, Dad." said Remy. "I just don't want to slip."
"You're not going to slip, you're almost there."
Mr. Fox attached and stapled those lights down as well.
Click. Click. Click.
There was still one more to bring up. Remy climbed back up, handed it to his father and he stapled it down.
Click. Click. Click.
Mr. Fox wiped the sweat from his forehead. "Whew," he said. "We did it. Good job, buddy. I'll take it from here."
Remy smiled and waved as he ran back inside.
But just as his father was finishing up checking on the chords, he slipped on a frozen tile. He slid down until he was hanging on the gutter.
"Remy!" he cried. "Sue! Help me! Get the ladder!"
But Mr. Fox lost his grip and landed in the shrubs.
Remy came rushing back out. "Dad! Are you okay?"
"Yeah, fine," he said, pulling himself up and brushing himself down.
"Good. Mom says dinner will be ready in ten minutes."
