True vampires can make spawns by biting others (they can control who they make their spawn of course). Spawns are basically vampires too, but weaker and mentally connected with their creators, and can also be partly controlled. To become a true vampire with all the potential, a spawn needs to kill one and feed on their blood.
It's quite a common idea, but I like it and wanted to use it in my character's story ^^.
