Open Source C Text Editors for Linux

XMLStarlet is a set of command line utilities (tools) to transform, query, validate, and edit XML documents and files using simple set of shell commands in similar way it is done for text files with UNIX grep, sed, awk, diff, patch, join, etc utilities.

Microsoft’s vscode source code is open source (MIT-licensed), but the product available for download (Visual Studio Code) is licensed under this not-FLOSS license and contains telemetry/tracking. The VSCodium project exists so that you don’t have to download+build from source. This project includes special build scripts that clone Microsoft’s vscode repo, run the build commands, and upload the resulting binaries for you to GitHub releases. These binaries are licensed under the MIT license. Telemetry is disabled. If you want to build from source yourself, head over to Microsoft’s vscode repo and follow their instructions. VSCodium exists to make it easier to get the latest version of MIT-licensed VSCode. Please note that some Visual Studio Code extensions have licenses that restrict their use to the official Visual Studio Code builds and therefore do not work with VSCodium.

Neovim is a hyperextensible text editor based on Vim. It seeks to maximize usability and extensibility, simplify maintenance and encourage contributions.

Geany is a powerful, stable and lightweight programmer's text editor that provides tons of useful features without bogging down your workflow. It runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, is translated into over 40 languages, and has built-in support for more than 50 programming languages.

GtkSpell provides MSWord-style highlighting of misspelled words in a GtkText widget. Also, right-clicking a misspelled word pops up a menu of suggested replacements. GtkSpell can easily be added to Gtk projects.

SETEdit is a friendly text editor. It is a text mode application with windows, buttons, mouse support, etc. The main target of the project are programmers so the editor is mainly oriented to programming.

Vis aims to be a modern, legacy-free, simple yet efficient editor, combining the strengths of both vi(m) and sam. It extends vi's modal editing with built-in support for multiple cursors/selections and combines it with sam's structural regular expression-based command language. A universal editor, it has decent Unicode support and should cope with arbitrary files, including large, binary, or single-line ones. Efficient syntax highlighting is provided using Parsing Expression Grammars, which can be conveniently expressed using Lua in the form of LPG. The editor core is written in a reasonable amount of clean (your mileage may vary), modern and legacy-free C code, enabling it to run in resource-constrained environments. The implementation should be easy to hack on and encourage experimentation. There is also a Lua API for in-process extensions. Vis strives to be simple and focuses on its core task: efficient text management.

Voikko is a spell checking, grammar checking, morphological analysis and hyphenation system. Spell checkers are available for multiple languages, other features for Finnish only.

Diff-ext is an extension for filemanagers such as Windows Explorer and Nautilus that allows to launch diff/merge tools on selected files.

NunniMCAX is a minimal (19KB) C library for parsing XML. The API recall SAX and is sequential and event-driven. The parser strives to verify that the XML is well-formed, but no validation. NunniMCAX's FSM has been generated using NunniFSMGen

SciTECO is an interactive TECO dialect, similar to Video TECO. It also adds features from classic TECO-11, as well as unique new ideas. Shed is a hex editor written for unix/linux using ncurses, with a friendly pico-style interface. Shows data in ascii, hex, dec, oct and binary, and allows editing in all of these bases. Features also include searching and dumping.

An alternative to the string library for C and C++ which is more functional and does not have buffer overflow problems.

The original source tarball for Evis version 2.2_0, unmodified, is in Files. README.txt gives tips for compiling on modern compilers (gcc-4.4.5 / linux) and using Xcode for Apple Sierra OS. Elvis is a vi(1) (visual ed) vi editor clone (vim is another clone). "vi" is short for "visual ed(1)" (the 1 means see manpage for ed in section 1 of unix manual pages). vi as a visual editor means typical keyboard editing with ed(1) accessible to do complex editing jobs that developers often require (emacs is a heavyweight better than vi, but harder to use).

TEA is a text editor that provides a wide range of text-processing functions (over 100) and the syntax highlighting. There are two branches of TEA: Qt-based and GTK-based.

The converter performs automatically the full process of converting the files of a C project into the equivalent C++ files. Classes are created, var and functions becomes attributes and methods and the changes are propagated into all files.

ECB is a file/code browser for Emacs. It can be used to browse any type of file and supports parsing of Java, C, C++, Elisp and some other code like perl, TeX, LaTeX. All browsing windows are within one frame and they are deletion-protected (eg by C-x 1)
