The carbon fibre tail boom had broken, and carbon fibre will fail catastrophically when it breaks – we can see this by the way that the shaft has broken length ways. However, although the spare part for this is available, it appeared that the original was exteamely well bonded so there was no easy way to remove it. This meant that a hole exactly the right size for the replacement had to be bored out of the tail and main chassis assembly:
This was done using a reamer and a Dremel tool:
