mind if i get insane about shane hollander for a second?

for those who don't know, during the tuna melt scene in the book, shane is not the one who initiates sex, it's ilya. the show changes this to make it so shane is the one to actively start anything. this, to me, makes the scene read entirely differently in quite frankly the best way possible. in the show, shane hears ilya talking with/about his father in a tone that makes it abundantly clear that something is wrong. this is followed with ilya sitting back down on the couch closer to shane, yes, but not leaning back, not getting comfortable, fidgeting more than he was before, etc. so shane asks if everything is okay, to which ilya makes a little joke, pulls shane closer, but still notably doesn't answer anything. shane initiating at this point reads to me as him not knowing what to do, not knowing how to comfort ilya because they don't talk about things like that, they don't do things like that, this is the first fucking time they've even woken up together. but there is one thing that they do together. he knows the feeling he gets after ilya takes him apart, how safe, comfortable, and sated it makes him feel. so, he tries to give that to ilya. shane takes charge more than he usually does, he speaks a bit more like ilya does, he tries to make ilya feel how he always does when they're together. he tries to make ilya feel better in the only way he knows how to, and he wears the fact that he loves ilya clearly on his face. it is no wonder then, that after this blatant display of his own affection on top of the mutual first names and the simulated domestic bliss, shaneβ€”a man that is so repressed emotionally that it's not even funnyβ€”would run as far and as fast as he could. he's revealed far, FAR, too much, and he's terrified that it's going to break him.
